  • Transdisciplinary co-creation increases the utilization of knowledge from sustainable development research

    Open Access•J Jacobi, Aymara Llanque et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2022•Cited by: 10•References: 13

Our study aimed at understanding the utilization of research knowledge generated in sustainable development research. Drawing on a sample of 54 recent research projects, we investigated how and by whom the knowledge was used, what changes were achieved, and how non-academic actors were involved. As a conceptual framework we combined a concept of “stages of knowledge utilization” with a spiral model that co-creates three forms of knowledge – syste…

  • Towards circular phosphorus

    Open Access•Christian Stamm, Claudia R Binder et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 40

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element to all living beings but also a finite resource. P-related problems center around broken P cycles from local to global scales. This paper presents outcomes from the 9th International Phosphorus Workshop (IPW9) held 2019 on how to move towards a sustainable P management. It is based on two sequential discussion rounds with all participants. Important progress was reported regarding the awareness of P as finit…

  • Understanding fertilizer adoption and effectiveness on maize in Zambia

    Open Access•William Burke, William J Burke et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Increased fertilizer use will likely be crucial for raising and sustaining farm productivity in Africa, but adoption may be limited by ineffectiveness under certain conditions. This article quantifies the impacts of soil characteristics on maize response to fertilizer in Zambia using a nationally representative sample of 1453 fields, combining economic, farm management and soil analysis data. Depending on soil regimes, average maize yield respons…

  • Handling the phosphorus paradox in agriculture and natural ecosystems

Open Access•Peter Leinweber, Ulrich Bathmann et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 119

This special issue of Ambio compiles a series of contributions made at the 8th International Phosphorus Workshop (IPW8), held in September 2016 in Rostock, Germany. The introducing overview article summarizes major published scientific findings in the time period from IPW7 (2015) until recently, including presentations from IPW8. The P issue was subdivided into four themes along the logical sequence of P utilization in production, environmental, …

  • Plant uptake of phosphorus and nitrogen recycled from synthetic source-separated urine

Open Access•Christophe Bonvin, Bastian Etter et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 31

Urine contains about 50 % of the phosphorus (P) and about 90 % of the nitrogen (N) excreted by humans and is therefore an interesting substrate for nutrient recovery. Source-separated urine can be used to precipitate struvite or, through a newly developed technology, nitrified urine fertilizer (NUF). In this study, we prepared (33)P radioisotope- and stable (15)N isotope-labeled synthetic NUF (SNUF) and struvite using synthetic urine and determin…
