  • Hydrology is the key factor for nitrogen export from tile-drained catchments under consistent land-management

Open Access•Andreas Bauwe, Petra Kahle et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

In this study, 14 years of climate, stream flow, land management, nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 – N) load and concentration data were analyzed to identify potential drivers for NO 3 – N losses at two tile-drained catchments under cropland use in northeastern Germany. Mean (±standard deviation) annual NO 3 – N concentrations were 9.7 ± 2.9 (drainage plot) and 6.8 ± 2.4 mg l −1 (ditch catchment), while mean annual NO 3 – N loads amounted to 22 ± 16 and 20…

  • Soil degradation determines release of nitrous oxide and dissolved organic carbon from peatlands

    Open Access•Haojie Liu, D Zak et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) release from peatlands are closely related to water management and soil degradation. However, peat degradation has not been explicitly accounted for when estimating national greenhouse gas inventories. Here, we assembled a comprehensive dataset covering European, Russian and Canadian peatlands and introduced soil bulk density (BD) as a proxy for peat degradation to estimate nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and dissolved organic c…

  • Handling the phosphorus paradox in agriculture and natural ecosystems

Open Access•Peter Leinweber, Ulrich Bathmann et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 119

This special issue of Ambio compiles a series of contributions made at the 8th International Phosphorus Workshop (IPW8), held in September 2016 in Rostock, Germany. The introducing overview article summarizes major published scientific findings in the time period from IPW7 (2015) until recently, including presentations from IPW8. The P issue was subdivided into four themes along the logical sequence of P utilization in production, environmental, …
