  • Exploring how municipalities address microplastics pollution in stormwater – a case study in a Swedish municipality

Open Access•Emma Fältström, Annica Carlsson•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Planning…•2025

This article investigates how municipalities have addressed the microplastics issue in relation to stormwater.Municipal officials in a Swedish municipality with different roles in relation to microplastics in stormwater and project managers with responsibility for plans and strategies related to microplastics were interviewed. Most measures had been introduced to limit dispersal of infill from artificial turfs, followed by measures against plastic…

  • Upstream pollution control by water utilities in Sweden

    Open Access•Emma Fältström, Sara Gustafsson•ARTICLE•Water Policy•2021

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are not designed to handle many harmful substances that are present in wastewater. The substances can also be transferred to the sewage sludge, which can make it unsuitable as a fertiliser. To alleviate these problems, Sweden has a practice called upstream work (uppströmsarbete) that aims to prevent harmful substances from entering the wastewater via efforts to control the pollution closer to the source. Upstre…

  • Land use influences macroinvertebrate community composition in boreal headwaters through altered stream conditions

    Open Access•Micael Jonsson, Ryan M Burrows et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 55

Land use is known to alter the nature of land-water interactions, but the potential effects of widespread forest management on headwaters in boreal regions remain poorly understood. We evaluated the importance of catchment land use, land cover, and local stream variables for macroinvertebrate community and functional trait diversity in 18 boreal headwater streams. Variation in macroinvertebrate metrics was often best explained by in-stream variab…
