Unveiling in-service teachers’ conceptions of ‘environment’ and ‘environmental education’
Underpinned by the premise that teachers’ conceptions determine their lesson planning and instructional practices, the study elucidates the prevalent ideas of teachers about two basic constructs: environment and environmental education. The study applied a phenomenographic framework to identify patterns in the conceptions of 17 primary school teachers in Ethiopia. Ecosystem restoration as a boundary object, demonstrated in a large-scale landscape restoration project in the Dovre Mountains, Norway
Coordinating and implementing ecosystem restoration projects can be challenging when the professions involved have differing perceptions of ecological restoration and implementation in practice. To overcome these barriers in complex restoration projects, we suggest analysing ecosystem restoration as a boundary object, a concept drawn from the field of science and technology studies. We use a large scale restoration project in the Dovre Mountains …
Digital storytelling, student engagement and deep learning in Geography
This study aims to provide insight into the usefulness of integrating digital stories in teaching and learning activities in Geography in higher education. More specifically, to identify how digital stories can enhance deep learning in Geography. Deep learning indicates understanding and creative use of knowledge in new settings, i.e. the highest levels in the revised version of Bloom’s taxonomy, a knowledge dimension from factual knowledge to me…
Perceptions of communication in Norwegian forest management
Communicative Approaches to Restoration Ecology
Extensive damage to the vegetation cover in arctic and alpine landscapes has raised the question of restoration as a possible management strategy. Restoration is a goal-oriented activity, a technological undertaking wider than its parent science of ecology. Social science and planning concepts and methods are necessary to handle the value judgements implicit in restoration. It is argued that the notion of 'desired state' is a better reference poi…
