  • A multimethod dating study of ancient permafrost, Batagay megaslump, east Siberia

    Open Access•Julian B Murton, Thomas Opel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

Dating of ancient permafrost is essential for understanding long-term permafrost stability and interpreting palaeoenvironmental conditions but presents substantial challenges to geochronology. Here, we apply four methods to permafrost from the megaslump at Batagay, east Siberia: (1) optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of quartz, (2) post-infrared infrared-stimulated luminescence (pIRIR) dating of K-feldspar, (3) radiocarbon dating of o…

  • Ice Complex formation on Bol'shoy Lyakhovsky Island (New Siberian Archipelago, East Siberian Arctic) since about 200 ka

Open Access•Sebastian Wetterich, Natalia Rudaya et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

Late Quaternary landscapes of unglaciated Beringia were largely shaped by ice-wedge polygon tundra. Ice Complex (IC) strata preserve such ancient polygon formations. Here we report on the Yukagir IC from Bol'shoy Lyakhovsky Island in northeastern Siberia and suggest that new radioisotope disequilibria ( 230 Th/U) dates of the Yukagir IC peat confirm its formation during the Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 7a–c interglacial period. The preservat…

  • The history of seabird colonies and the North Water ecosystem

    Open Access•Thomas A Davidson, Sebastian Wetterich et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2018•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 34

The North Water (NOW) polynya is one of the most productive marine areas of the Arctic and an important breeding area for millions of seabirds. There is, however, little information on the dynamics of the polynya or the bird populations over the long term. Here, we used sediment archives from a lake and peat deposits along the Greenland coast of the NOW polynya to track long-term patterns in the dynamics of the seabird populations. Radiocarbon da…

  • Rapid thermokarst evolution during the mid-Holocene in Central Yakutia, Russia

    Open Access•Mathias Ulrich, Sebastian Wetterich et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Referencias: 5

The reconstruction of Holocene thermokarst landform evolution is important to understand the potential impact of current global climate change on permafrost regions. A multi-proxy approach was applied to analyse the sedimentological and biogeochemical characteristics as well as pollen and lacustrine microfossils of a core profile drilled in a small pingo within a large Central Yakutian thermokarst basin (alas). Age–depth modelling with macrofossi…

  • Northeast Siberian ice wedges confirm Arctic winter warming over the past two millennia

    Open Access•Thomas Opel, Thomas Laepple et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

Arctic climate has experienced major changes over the past millennia that are not fully understood in terms of their controls and seasonality. Stable isotope data from ice wedges in permafrost provide unique information on past winter climate. Recently, an ice-wedge record from the Lena River Delta suggested for the first time that Siberian winter temperatures increased throughout the Holocene, contradicting most other Arctic palaeoclimate recons…

  • Late glacial and Holocene sedimentation, vegetation, and climate history from easternmost Beringia (northern Yukon Territory, Canada)

Open Access•Michael Fritz, Ulrike Herzschuh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Beringian climate and environmental history are poorly characterized at its easternmost edge. Lake sediments from the northern Yukon Territory have recorded sedimentation, vegetation, summer temperature and precipitation changes since ~ 16 cal ka BP. Herb-dominated tundra persisted until ~ 14.7 cal ka BP with mean July air temperatures ≤ 5°C colder and annual precipitation 50 to 120 mm lower than today. Temperatures rapidly increased during the B…

  • Arctic Siberian environments during the last Interglacial

    Open Access•Sebastian Wetterich•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Sedimentary characteristics and origin of the Late Pleistocene Ice Complex on north-east Siberian Arctic coastal lowlands and islands – A review

    Open Access•Lutz Schirrmeister, V Kunitsky et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2011
