  • Boom and bust

    Open Access•Soytavanh Mienmany, Peter Kanowski et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Viewpoint•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 23

Crop booms are a significant driver of change for both rural landscapes and smallholder livelihoods. Cavendish bananas have boomed in northern Laos and replaced maize, the previous boom crop, through land leasing contracts between farmers and Chinese companies. This study of two villages in Oudomxay Province explores rural households' participation in this banana boom and the conjunctures that shape variegated livelihood pathways and outcomes. Ho…

  • Sustainability certification and legality verification in Indonesian natural forest-based wood products value chains

Depi Susilawati, Peter Kanowski et al.•ARTICLE•The International Forestry Review•2021

Indonesian natural forest concessions and value chains are governed by a mandatory Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK), which includes assessment of Sustainable Production Forest Management (PHPL). Concessionaires and processors may also pursue voluntary forest certification. This study explores actors' compliance with these instruments along wood product value chains originating primarily from natural forests. Empirical results demonstrat…

  • Multilateral forestry research and tertiary forestry education for development

    Open Access•Peter Kanowski, P J Kanowski•ARTICLE•The International Forestry Review•2020

The contemporary institutional landscapes for multilateral forestry research and tertiary forestry education for development were shaped largely in the last three decades of the 20 th century. Some limitations of largely post-colonial arrangements in the 1970s for forestry research for development were addressed by the establishment of CIFOR and incorporation of ICRAF into the CGIAR system in the early 1990s, following international processes in …

  • Economic returns to households participating in different models of commercial tree plantations in Lao PDR

Alex van der Meer Simo, Peter Kanowski et al.•ARTICLE•The International Forestry Review•2020

Four tree plantation models implemented in Lao PDR and a hypothetical model were compared in terms of the projected economic benefits and those realised by participating rural households, and households' attitudes to further plantation expansion. Models comprised two forms of land-sharing plantation concessions, and contract and independent tree growing. Benefits and costs over the plantation cycle were used to calculate net present values. Tree …

  • Learning From 'Actually Existing' Redd

Open Access•Wolfram H Dressler, Wolfram Dressler et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Society•2019

The 2015 United Nations Paris Agreement on Climate reinforces actions to conserve and enhance forests as carbon reservoirs. A decade after sub-national demonstration projects to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) commenced, we examine why many REDD+ schemes appear to have fuelled social conflict while having limited success in addressing the drivers of forest loss and degradation. Our analysis is two-tiered: first …

  • Exploring the social dimensions and complexity of cumulative impacts

Edwina A Loxton, Jacki Schirmer et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2013

Climate change is a threat to biodiversity, and adaptation measures should be considered in biodiversity conservation planning. Protected areas (PA) are expected to be impacted by climate change and improving their connectivity with biological corridors (BC) has been proposed as a potential adaptation measure, although assessing its effectiveness remains a challenge. In Mesoamerica, efforts to preserve the biodiversity have led to the creation of…
