  • Impact of the wildland–urban interface on large carnivore damage in the Polish Carpathians

Open Access•Dominik Kaim, Carlos Bautista et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 78

Large carnivore populations are recovering across Europe, likely influencing human–wildlife interactions in the areas where both human and carnivore activity overlap, like wildland–urban interface (WUI). We analyzed over 3500 cases of damage caused by brown bears, wolves, and lynx in the Polish Carpathians (2010–2017) to identify spatial and temporal hot spots and their determinants. Wolf damage was associated with sheep density and historical WU…

  • Changes in building numbers and density in Poland since the 1970s

Open Access•Piotr Szubert, Dominik Kaim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

This paper investigates changes in building numbers and density in Poland over the past 50 years. By combining building data from historical maps (1970s-1980s) with contemporary digital topographic datasets, we analyze changes in building numbers, distribution, and density at a national scale with high spatial resolution. We calculated a change index (Normalized Buildings Number Change Index, NBCI) within a 2 × 2 km grid covering the entire count…

  • Growth of the wildland-urban interface and its spatial determinants in the Polish Carpathians

Open Access•Dominik Kaim, Piotr Szubert et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2024

The Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) is the area where natural vegetation is close to housing and area of concern due to various negative consequences for humans and the environment including fire ignitions, landscape fragmentation and human-wildlife interactions. The WUI is a global phenomenon, and widespread in many countries but long-term WUI dynamics and the main factors causing WUI growth are unknown. Our goal was to assess WUI changes in the …

  • Changes in spatial discontinuity in settlement patterns in the Czech‐Polish border area: A case study of Těšín Silesia

  • Unlocking archival censuses for spatial analysis: An historical dataset of the administrative units of Galicia 1857–1910

    Open Access•Krzysztof Ostafin, Mateusz Troll et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2023•References: 25

The lack of long-term assessment of the administrative divisions of Galicia, a former part of the Austrian monarchy, has so far been a serious obstacle in the mapping and spatial analyses of archival census data. To fill this gap, we reconstructed the boundaries of 5944 cadastral communes, court districts, and political districts into circles (https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/PXDP41). Geometric boundaries are accompanied by different n…

  • Impact of the Cartographer’s Position and Topographic Accessibility on the Accuracy of Historical Land Use Information: Case of the Second Military Survey Maps of the Habsburg Empire

Open Access•Krzysztof Ostafin, Małgorzata Pietrzak et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

Historical maps are critical for long-term land use reconstructions; however, quantifying the uncertainty involved in comparing historical maps with recent data remains a considerable challenge. To date, many works have focused on the technical aspects of comparing historical and contemporary materials, but the potential sources of uncertainty inherent in historical data remain poorly understood. In this paper, we analyze the impacts of the topog…

  • Railway network of Galicia and Austrian Silesia (1847-1914)

Open Access•Dominik Kaim, Jakub Taczanowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

We describe and share reconstructed data of the historical railway network of Galicia and Austrian Silesia – two regions of the Habsburg Empire that covered more than 80 000 km2 that are currently divided among Czechia, Poland and Ukraine. The network dataset includes the times of railway appearance and of the most dynamic development until 1914, which marked the outbreak of the First World War. Most of the lines were reconstructed based on OpenS…

  • Historical land use dataset of the Carpathian region (1819–1980)

Open Access•Juraj Lieskovský, Dominik Kaim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2018

We produced the first spatially explicit, cross-border, digital map of long-term (160 years) land use in the Carpathian Ecoregion, the Hungarian part of the Pannonian plains and the historical region of Moravia in the Czech Republic. We mapped land use in a regular 2 × 2 km point grid. Our dataset comprises of 91,310 points covering 365,240 km2 in seven countries (Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine and Romania). We digitized thr…
