  • Growth of the wildland-urban interface and its spatial determinants in the Polish Carpathians

Open Access•Dominik Kaim, Piotr Szubert et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2024

The Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) is the area where natural vegetation is close to housing and area of concern due to various negative consequences for humans and the environment including fire ignitions, landscape fragmentation and human-wildlife interactions. The WUI is a global phenomenon, and widespread in many countries but long-term WUI dynamics and the main factors causing WUI growth are unknown. Our goal was to assess WUI changes in the …

  • Narrowing of glacial isthmus between Sørkapp Land and Torell Land, southern Spitsbergen, 1900–2023

Open Access•Michał Pawłowski, Michal E Pawlowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

The paper provides a comprehensive overview of the transformation of the glacial isthmus between Srkapp Land (southern peninsula) and the remainder of Spitsbergen from 1900 to 2023.The region distinguishes itself with notable environmental and landscape transformations since the early twentieth century, the post-Little Ice Age.These ongoing transformations are poised to swiftly convert the Srkapp Land peninsula into an island, driven by the decli…

  • Coastal landscape degradation and disappearance of Davislaguna Lake, Sørkappland, Svalbard, 1900–2021

Open Access•Wieslaw Ziaja, Krzysztof Ostafin et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2023

The paper describes the transformation of the coastal landscape near former Davislaguna Lake, SE Spitsbergen. It is a comparative study which outlines the changing state of the area based on old maps, other archival materials, remote sensing data from the years 1900 to 2021, and our own fieldwork performed since 2005. The indirect cause of this transformation is identified herein as climate warming which has produced a progressive degradation of …

  • Changes in spatial discontinuity in settlement patterns in the Czech‐Polish border area: A case study of Těšín Silesia

  • Unlocking archival censuses for spatial analysis: An historical dataset of the administrative units of Galicia 1857–1910

    Open Access•Krzysztof Ostafin, Mateusz Troll et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2023•References: 25

The lack of long-term assessment of the administrative divisions of Galicia, a former part of the Austrian monarchy, has so far been a serious obstacle in the mapping and spatial analyses of archival census data. To fill this gap, we reconstructed the boundaries of 5944 cadastral communes, court districts, and political districts into circles (https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/PXDP41). Geometric boundaries are accompanied by different n…

  • Impact of the Cartographer’s Position and Topographic Accessibility on the Accuracy of Historical Land Use Information: Case of the Second Military Survey Maps of the Habsburg Empire

Open Access•Krzysztof Ostafin, Małgorzata Pietrzak et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

Historical maps are critical for long-term land use reconstructions; however, quantifying the uncertainty involved in comparing historical maps with recent data remains a considerable challenge. To date, many works have focused on the technical aspects of comparing historical and contemporary materials, but the potential sources of uncertainty inherent in historical data remain poorly understood. In this paper, we analyze the impacts of the topog…

  • Effects of post-WWII forced displacements on long-term landscape dynamics in the Polish Carpathians

Open Access•Andrzej N Affek, Andrzej Affek et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2021

Armed conflicts and major political changes can result in the forced displacement of thousands of people and may have substantial effects on the environment. However, it is difficult to predict and mitigate long-term consequences of such displacements, especially when they trigger abrupt land-use changes that result in a regime shift of the land-use system. Our main goal was to determine the effects of post-WWII forced displacements on long-term …

  • Railway network of Galicia and Austrian Silesia (1847-1914)

Open Access•Dominik Kaim, Jakub Taczanowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

We describe and share reconstructed data of the historical railway network of Galicia and Austrian Silesia – two regions of the Habsburg Empire that covered more than 80 000 km2 that are currently divided among Czechia, Poland and Ukraine. The network dataset includes the times of railway appearance and of the most dynamic development until 1914, which marked the outbreak of the First World War. Most of the lines were reconstructed based on OpenS…

  • Origin and location of new Arctic islands and straits due to glacial recession

    Open Access•Wieslaw Ziaja, Krzysztof Ostafin•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 10

A total of 34 new islands (each 0.5 km 2 or above) have appeared due to recession of Arctic glaciers under climate warming since the 1960s. Analysis of maps and satellite images of the Arctic coasts has been a basic method of recognizing these islands. Their origin is the final stage of a process which began in the twentieth century. They appear only on the coasts where bedrock elevations above sea level are surrounded by depressions below this l…

  • Historical land use dataset of the Carpathian region (1819–1980)

Open Access•Juraj Lieskovský, Dominik Kaim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2018

We produced the first spatially explicit, cross-border, digital map of long-term (160 years) land use in the Carpathian Ecoregion, the Hungarian part of the Pannonian plains and the historical region of Moravia in the Czech Republic. We mapped land use in a regular 2 × 2 km point grid. Our dataset comprises of 91,310 points covering 365,240 km2 in seven countries (Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine and Romania). We digitized thr…

  • Landscape–seascape dynamics in the isthmus between Sørkapp Land and the rest of Spitsbergen: Will a new big Arctic island form

    Open Access•Wieslaw Ziaja, Krzysztof Ostafin•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Transformation of the glaciated isthmus between Sørkapp Land and the rest of Spitsbergen since 1900 is described. The landscape-seascape dynamics depends on the glacial recession determined by climate warming after the Little Ice Age (i.e., since the beginning of the twentieth century, and especially since the 1980s). The isthmus has been narrowed from 28 km in 1899-1900 to 6.2 km in 2013, and lowered by 60-200 m from 1936 to 2005. Two isthmus' g…

  • Coastal Landscape Dynamics in NE Sørkapp Land (SE Spitsbergen), 1900–2005

Wieslaw Ziaja, Wojciech Maciejowski et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2009•Cited by: 2

This report presents the current dynamics of the natural environment and landscape in a part of the mountainous southeastern Spitsbergen coast on the Barents Sea in 1900-2005. Its current state substantially varies from what is shown on recently published topographic maps actual for 1936. The physico-geographical mapping and GPS survey were the basic field methods of recognizing the area, supplemented by remote sensing. Each landscape component, …
