  • Role of Sea-ice Biota in Nutrient and Organic Material Cycles in the Northern Baltic Sea

Jorma Kuparinen, Harri Kuosa et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•References: 26

This paper compiles biological and chemical sea-ice data from three areas of the Baltic Sea: the Bothnian Bay (Hailuoto, Finland), the Bothnian Sea (Norrby, Sweden), and the Gulf of Finland (Tvärminne, Finland). The data consist mainly of field measurements and experiments conducted during the BIREME project from 2003 to 2006, supplemented with relevant published data. Our main focus was to analyze whether the biological activity in Baltic Sea se…

  • Denitrification in the River Estuaries of the Northern Baltic Sea

Hanna Silvennoinen, Susanna Hietanen et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•References: 49

Estuaries have been suggested to have an important role in reducing the nitrogen load transported to the sea. We measured denitrification rates in six estuaries of the northern Baltic Sea. Four of them were river mouths in the Bothnian Bay (northern Gulf of Bothnia), and two were estuary bays, one in the Archipelago Sea (southern Gulf of Bothnia) and the other in the Gulf of Finland. Denitrification rates in the four river mouths varied between 3…

  • Eutrophication and Self-purification

Jorma Kuparinen, Liisa Tuominen•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2001•Cited by: 3

During the 1990s nitrogen reserves have shown rising trends in the northern Baltic Sea. Changes in denitrification explain some of the fluctuations observed in nitrogen reserves. Although denitrification is an anaerobic process, the most efficient removal of nitrogen by denitrification occurs where the sediment is moderately well oxidized. A dramatic decrease in the ratio of SiO4 to DIN (DIN = NO3 NH4) in the northern Baltic proper during the per…
