  • The Impact of Low-Level Lead Toxicity on School Performance among Hispanic Subgroups in the Chicago Public Schools

Open Access•Michael Blackowicz, Daniel Hryhorczuk et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Early childhood lead exposure is associated with poorer achievement on standardized reading and math tests in the 3rd grade for Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Other Hispanic children enrolled in Chicago Public Schools. While we did not see interactions between BLL and ISAT performance by Hispanic subgroup, the stronger association between BLL and math failure for Black Puerto Rican children is intriguing and warrants further study

  • Organic Mercury Levels among the Yanomama of the Brazilian Amazon Basin

Kimberly Anne Sing, Daniel Hryhorczuk et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2003•Citada por: 5

The Catrimani River basin in northern Brazil is the home of the Yanomama and has been the site of renegade gold mining since 1980. Gold-mining operations release inorganic mercury (Hg) into the environment where it is organified and biomagnified in aquatic ecosystems. Ingestion of mercury-contaminated fish poses a potential hazard to fish-eating populations such as the Yanomama. We surveyed Hg levels in Yanomama villagers living near mined and un…

In July 1976, Cook County Hospital, a 1,363-bed general public hospital in Chicago, Illinois, established a hospital-funded Occupational Medicine Clinic. A review was made of the clinic records of the 486 new patients evaluated at the clinic from July 1979 to June 1981. Information is presented concerning age, ethnic origin, sex, union representation, referral sources, reason for the referral, number and type of toxic exposure, diagnosis, occupat…
