  • Selected Metal Concentration in Maternal and Cord Blood

    Open Access•Karolina Kot, Natalia Łanocha-Arendarczyk et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Essential and non-essential elements deficiencies may lead to various birth complications. The aim of this paper was to determine calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), phosphorus (P), lead (Pb), strontium (Sr), and zinc (Zn) concentrations in maternal blood and cord blood. Whole blood and cord blood samples collected from pregnant women (n = 136) were analyzed for the concentration of the elements by sp…

  • Status and trends of mercury pollution of the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems in Poland

Open Access•Agnieszka Jędruch, Lucyna Falkowska et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2021•References: 77

The goal of this paper is to assess the current status and trends of total mercury (THg) contamination of the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems in Poland. The study shows that the reduced domestic and worldwide atmospheric emission of Hg resulted in decreased THg level in the terrestrial biotope and biosphere. Considering that Poland is one of the main Hg emitters in Europe, the THg concentrations in its abiotic environment are still elevated…

  • Total and Methylmercury in Soft Tissues of White-Tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) and Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) Collected in Poland

    Open Access•Elzbieta Kalisinska, J Górecki et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 25

Mercury (Hg) contamination in piscivorous birds, especially methylmercury (MeHg), has been drawing much attention worldwide in regard to its bioaccumulation and biomagnification in food chains. In this study on Hg in the soft tissues of white-tailed eagles (n = 22) and ospreys (n = 2) from Poland, total Hg (THg) range was 0.15-47.6 while MeHg range was 0.11-8.05 mg kg−1 dry weight. In both species, median THg and MeHg concentrations were lower in…
