  • A Multivariate Regression Model for Predicting Precipitation in the Daqing Mountains

Open Access•Ranhao Sun, Sun Ranhao et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2008

Multivariate regression analysis, combined with residuals correction, was carried out to develop a precipitation prediction model for the Daqing Mountains of Inner Mongolia in northern China. Precipitation data collected at 56 stations between 1955 and 1990 were used: data from 48 stations for model development and data from 8 stations for additional tests. Five topographic factors—altitude, slope, aspect, longitude, and latitude—were taken into …

  • Large-scale Hydroelectric Projects and Mountain Development on the Upper Yangtze River

Open Access•Yonghui Yao, Yao Yonghui et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2006

The upper Yangtze River is extremely rich in hydropower, with 9 large-scale hydropower projects planned and 2 under construction. Current and projected large-scale hydropower projects pose difficult challenges as well as great hope for development of local impoverished areas. There are great difficulties in coordinating hydropower development and local regional development, owing to gaps in national policies, clear separation between enterprise a…

  • Integration of Data on Chinese Mountains into a Digital Altitudinal Belt System

Open Access•Zhang Baiping, Baiping Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2006

China has a great variety of altitudinal belts due to its size, its numerous high mountains, and the dynamic and thermal effects of the immense Tibetan Plateau. 63 altitudinal belts—31 of which can be called “base belts” as they correspond to the basic climatic regimes at the foot of mountains—have been identified, and a standardized and hierarchized classification for the climatic regimes is outlined. The other 32 altitudinal belts occur in vari…

  • Urbanization and De-urbanization in Mountain Regions of China

Open Access•Zhang Baiping, Baiping Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2004

Rapid economic development has induced urbanization in China. Urbanization and de-urbanization strategies co-exist in most of China's mountain regions. Urbanization typically occurs in famous scenic spots and in the vicinity of macro engineering works, while de-urbanization is implemented in large areas by the government to protect the natural environment. Over-urbanization has considerable impacts on the esthetic qualities of many mountain touri…

  • Sustainably Managing Montane Forests in Arid Mountain Regions

Zhang Baiping, Baiping Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2002

The Oytag valley, about 100 km west of Kashi (Kashgar), is one of the few valleys with forests in the Kunlun Mountains. It underwent severe forest destruction in the late 1950s, and about only one fourth of the natural forest remains. Since the early 1980s, forest conservation and artificial regeneration have been carried out in the valley

  • Geoecology and Sustainable Development in the Kunlun Mountains, China

Open Access•Zhang Baiping, Baiping Zhang•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1995

The Kunlun is one of the most extensive of the high mountain ranges of the world. Located on the northern border of the Tibetan Plateau and sandwiched between warm temperate desert and Tibetan alpine desert, it has developed a special geoecological structure: patches of montane coniferous forest; coexistence of three types of desert at different altitudes; extensive distribution of montane desert; the high cold-arid core of the Tibetan Plateau, t…
