The small pelagics value chain in Mauritania – Recent changes and food security impacts
Quality-enhancing fishing in the coastal fishery for Atlantic cod in Norway
In the important coastal fishery for Atlantic cod in Norway quality-based pricing is largely absent. Thus, driven by a focus on fish quantity, not quality, a high share of downgraded fish is landed. This study identified some encouraging exceptions with actors trying to align incentives and increase revenues in both fishing and processing. More specifically, we examine two cases involving quality-enhancing fishing and find indications of substant…
Unpacking the tuna traceability mosaic – EU SFPAs and the tuna value chain
Traceability has been gaining in importance recently and has seen its potential uses within fisheries expanding from primarily food safety to combat illegal fishing and promote sustainability. In the tuna value chain, key processing actors have introduced comprehensive systems allowing consumers to trace products right back to the vessel that caught the tuna and the catch date. Traceability is also an important component of EU SFPAs (Sustainable …
Fish quality and market performance
This study focuses on fish quality and resource utilization at the ex-vessel level of the value chain. Substantial waste in the form of reduced fish quality is revealed for Atlantic cod landed by the coastal fleet in Norway, with approximately 30% of the sampled cod from 399 catches downgraded, implying reduced value of products in onshore processing. By using an objective quality index for individual catches in hedonic price modeling, we obtain …
Institutional and financial entry barriers in a fishery
Fishery policies over the past decades have mainly aimed at capacity reduction to preserve overexploited stocks. For that reason, research has focused on exploring incentives to exit fisheries rather than examining entry barriers. However, in quota-regulated fisheries, potential entrants might face substantial institutional and financial barriers, as opposed to incumbents, whose rights might have been historically secured by grandfathering or by …
Seafood from a changing Arctic
We review current knowledge about climate change impacts on Arctic seafood production. Large-scale changes in the Arctic marine food web can be expected for the next 40-100 years. Possible future trajectories under climate change for Arctic capture fisheries anticipate the movement of aquatic species into new waters and changed the dynamics of existing species. Negative consequences are expected for some fish stocks but others like the Barents Se…
