  • Status and trends of mercury pollution of the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems in Poland

Open Access•Agnieszka Jędruch, Lucyna Falkowska et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2021•References: 77

The goal of this paper is to assess the current status and trends of total mercury (THg) contamination of the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems in Poland. The study shows that the reduced domestic and worldwide atmospheric emission of Hg resulted in decreased THg level in the terrestrial biotope and biosphere. Considering that Poland is one of the main Hg emitters in Europe, the THg concentrations in its abiotic environment are still elevated…

  • Modeling the global atmospheric transport and deposition of mercury to the Great Lakes

Open Access•Mark Cohen, Mark D Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2016

Mercury contamination in the Great Lakes continues to have important public health and wildlife ecotoxicology impacts, and atmospheric deposition is a significant ongoing loading pathway. The objective of this study was to estimate the amount and source-attribution for atmospheric mercury deposition to each lake, information needed to prioritize amelioration efforts. A new global, Eulerian version of the HYSPLIT-Hg model was used to simulate the …

  • Impacts on human health in the Arctic owing to climate-induced changes in contaminant cycling – The EU ArcRisk project policy outcome

    Open Access•Józef M Pacyna, Ian T Cousins et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2015

  • Socioeconomic Consequences of Mercury Use and Pollution

    Edward B Swain, Paul M Jakus et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 44

In the past, human activities often resulted in mercury releases to the biosphere with little consideration of undesirable consequences for the health of humans and wildlife. This paper outlines the pathways through which humans and wildlife are exposed to mercury. Fish consumption is the major route of exposure to methylmercury. Humans can also receive toxic doses of mercury through inhalation of elevated concentrations of gaseous elemental merc…

  • Atmospheric emissions of some POPs in Europe

    Open Access•Knut Breivik, Vigdis Vestreng et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2006•Cited by: 1

  • Tropospheric ozone and aerosols in climate agreements

    Open Access•Kristin Rypdal, Terje K Berntsen et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 3

  • Radiation dose due to atmospheric releases from coal/fired power stations

    B J Głowiak, B Głowiak et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1980

Individual and population doses, to which human organs are exposed, were analyzed. These doses are due to coal‐fired power plants. The effect includes contamination by inhalation and contamination by digestion of contaminated food (the latter being dependent on the contamination level in soils, vegetation, water and animals). A percentage distribution of radio‐nuclide doses in individual human organs is given. The highest doses, to which the huma…
