Climate change stimulates the growth of the intertidal macroalgae Ascophyllum nodosum near the northern distribution limit
Ascophyllum nodosum is a foundation macroalgae of the intertidal zone that distributes across latitude 41.3-69.7°N. We tested the hypothesis that growth of A. nodosum near the northern distribution edge increases with warming. We retrospectively quantified the growth of eight A. nodosum populations at West Greenland and North Norway (from 64°N to 69°N). For seven populations, we measured growth rates since 1997-2002 and for one of them we extende…
The Boulder Patch (North Alaska, Beaufort Sea) and its Benthic Algal Flora
We describe the benthic algal flora within the Boulder Patch, a unique and relatively isolated assemblage of cobbles and boulders in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea, on the basis of a compilation of opportunistic in situ collections made from 1977 to 2006. The Boulder Patch is a shallow (4–7 m) High Arctic kelp community containing 78 benthic algal species, all of which represent approximately one-half of the pan-Arctic benthic flora (140 species) inclu…
Effects of Experimental Releases of Oil and Dispersed Oil on Arctic Nearshore Macrobenthos. III. Macroalgae
An experimental subsurface release of chemically dispersed oil at Cape Hatt, northern Baffin Island, resulted in short-term relatively high oil concentrations in the water of two adjacent bays. Untreated oil released onto the surface of the third bay could not be detected in the water below a depth of 1 m. Both releases, however, resulted in measurable contamination of sediments in shallow water. Macroalgae at 3 m depth were sampled by a diver-op…
Arctic and Subarctic Examples of Intertidal Zonation
Analysis based on extensive observations of shores on Baffin Island, at Coppermine, and other localities on the north mainland coast and arctic islands of Canada. Populations on rocky shores were found to exist only where shore ice was thinner than tidal amplitude; in the Arctic proper, they are rare and limited to low levels as exemplified from Coronation Gulf - Boothia Peninsula, Admiralty Inlet, etc. In the sub-Arctic they have a mid-littoral …
