Family Voice
Family group conferences (FGCs) in child welfare brings wider family members together to engage in the best way to meet a child’s needs. Shared decision-making is hypothesised to result in more even power-sharing between families and professionals, and greater trust. Previous research suggested FCGs may reduce more intrusive state intervention

Identifying critically ill children in Malawi
In low-resource settings, a reliable bedside score for timely identification of children at risk of dying, could help focus resources and improve survival. The rapid bedside Liverpool quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (LqSOFA) uses clinical parameters only and performed well in United Kingdom cohorts. A similarly quick clinical assessment-only score has however not yet been developed for paediatric populations in sub-Saharan Africa. In a …

Student perspectives on school-based social workers
Purpose School social work, in various forms, is well established internationally and has a growing evidence base. Yet existing research focuses on professional perspectives rather than those of students. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring secondary school student perspectives of having social workers in schools (SWIS). It was undertaken in England as part of the SWIS trial, which tested whether secondary school-based social workers co…
The cost-effectiveness and cost-consequences of a school-based social worker intervention
The SWIS trial compared a social worker assigned to schools (intervention) versus usual practice. • The mean total cost of the SWIS intervention per school was £106,771.30. • Variations in staff recruitment to SWIS teams led to differences in costs for local authorities. • Costs were re-estimated to account for staff time and quality of implementation. • The probability of SWIS being cost-effective for averting a section 47 enquiry at cost-effect…
Family Group Conference Provision in UK Local Authorities and Associations with Children Looked after Rates
Family group conferences (FGCs) in child welfare share decision-making with family members by bringing the immediate and wider family together to make a plan to meet a child’s needs. This paper reports survey findings on FGC provision in the UK in 2022 and explores whether in England the presence of an FGC service and the rate of FGC provision is associated with the rate of children in care, entering care, in kinship foster care and leaving care.…
