The intersection of leaving out-of-home care and the risk of homelessness
Young people who have been placed with foster parents or in residential care during upbringing are disproportionately represented among young people experiencing homelessness. This international trend has prompted growing attention within social policy and research on the intersection of leaving care and homelessness. This scoping review analyses research published between 2000 and 2024, examining the scope of existing studies, methodologies, def…
In-between Belonging and Longing
This article explores motivations of young people running away from residential care institutions. Running away from out-of-home care is often viewed as problematic due to its serious consequences for both the runaways, the other residents and the institutions. Drawing on 19 individual interviews and six focus groups with young people living in residential care, this article examines their experiences of running away within a theoretical framewor…
Learning to Evaluate Yourself. The Consequences of Institutionalized Understandings of Progression for Young People With Care Experience
This article examines how young people who have been closely involved with child welfare services throughout their upbringing are required to assess and evaluate their life and progress in institutionalized ways. Within Danish child welfare policy and social work practice, progress is institutionally understood as a linear and one‐dimensional process focusing on ‘development’, ‘independent living’ and ‘motivation’. Drawing on qualitative intervie…
Temporally limited and conditional care
Young people who grew up in out-of-home care often lack caregiving and supportive relationships. In this article, young care leavers’ ‘route of care’ is followed focusing on their past experiences of conditional care and how these experiences are interlaced with and impact their relational possibilities in young adulthood. Based on interviews with eight care leavers in Denmark and guided by a distinction between unconditional, lifelong family car…

Navigating educational success
This paper explores modes of expectation among care‐experienced young people when navigating educational success. Luhmann's theoretical framework is used to conceptualise experiences of educational success and the role of uncertainty. We identify three modes of expectation: trust, risk and danger. To illustrate these modes, we draw on selected examples from an interview study with 28 care‐experienced young people focusing on their experiences of …
Sometimes I feel 60, sometimes I feel 13’
This paper examines perceptions of subjective age identity presented in interviews with eight young people who had been in out-of-home care during their upbringing. Research shows that care-leavers often experience a variety of vulnerabilities and challenges in comparison to their same-aged peers. Additionally, they often do not organise their lives according to the same educational, professional, and relational structures as other young people. …
Problem-Based Learning in Social Work Education
Problem-based learning (PBL) constitutes a promising way of integrating academia and social work practice because PBL fosters engagement with real-life problems and enhances important skills needed in social work practice. However, little attention has been given to social work students’ experiences of PBL. In this article we address this gap by exploring experiences of learning and learning preferences among master’s-level students in a Danish s…
Leaving Care in the UK and Scandinavia
In both the UK and Scandinavia, young people leaving care have traditionally experienced accelerated and compressed transition pathways, without access to the levels of practical, financial and emotional support that are typically available to their peers in the general population. Heightened awareness that young people leaving care are vulnerable to poor outcomes has led academics and (to varying degrees) the charitable sector and politicians to…
Keeping You Close at a Distance
The integration of ethics into research with young people in vulnerable life situations is an on-going challenge that cannot be solved through predefined guidelines or fixed standards. In this article, we address the ethical predicaments of keeping in contact with young people in vulnerable life situations through a longer duration of time in order to conduct follow-up interviews. Drawing on cases from two separate studies, the context of the int…
