In the shadows of managerialism
Much has been written in the academic literature about the teaching of, or failure to teach, controversial and contested issues related to Northern Ireland’s recent past; to date, however, little attention has been paid to the role of managerialism in teachers’ decision-making. Drawing on qualitative data from post-primary teachers of History and Citizenship in Northern Ireland, this paper explores how these teachers actualise the Northern Irelan…
Inclusion is not enough
In Northern Ireland (NI), where the education system has historically been shaped by religious and cultural divisions, recent demographic shifts due to inward migration present both challenges and opportunities for educational leaders. While research reveals the crucial role of leaders in promoting inclusivity [Miller, P. 2019. “Race and Ethnicity in Educational Leadership.” In Principles of Educational Leadership and Management, edited by T. Bus…

Education along border regions in Ireland
This research examines primary schooling in border communities in Ireland. • It is the first formal research into travel across the Irish border for education. • Primary schools serve diverse communities, some of which straddle the border. • The future of the border will impact on education in these communities. A one-year research project with communities along the border in Ireland, the only land border between the UK and the European Union, ex…
Managerialism and human rights in a post-conflict society
International human rights instruments provide a legal basis for an agreed set of human values globally. These ‘values’ are expected to underpin the purposes and content of education. This paper aims to explore how compliance with human rights instruments and values is balanced by educational leaders in Northern Ireland where diverse interpretations of human rights are held by the main communities and managerialist principles guide education poli…
Teaching about the past in Northern Ireland
Citizenship education has been a feature of the school curricula in many western democracies since the 1990s. Consequently, there is a proliferation of research which explores its efficacy in instilling political literacy and encouraging democratic engagement amongst pupils. Less is known however about how citizenship is taught in societies emerging from conflicts which are [at least in part] motivated by competing narratives around citizenship. …
Children's adjustment over time in foster care
This paper reports on part of a prospective study of all children entering new planned long-term foster placements in Northern Ireland within a seven month period. This part of the study charted the competencies and behaviour of the children (N=19) over time in the home and school environments. This paper aims to specifically examine three questions. First, the extent, if any, of cross-informant agreement in ratings between foster mothers, foster…
