  • A Proposed Method to Combine Ranking and Graphic Rating in Performance Appraisal: The Quantitative Ranking Scale

    Open Access•Chi‐Kwan Chiu, Chi-Kwan Chiu et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1990

A method is proposed to combine a relative and an absolute approach to performance appraisal; specifically, graphic rating and ranking are combined. In two studies which examined this method, called the Quantitative Ranking Scale (QRS), less leniency generally was found in QRS than in graphic rating. The psychometric performance of the QRS was best when the distinction between the QRS and pure ranking was least. Nonetheless, the system would appe…

  • Group‐serving attributions across intergroup contexts: Cultural differences in the explanation of sex‐typed behaviours

Open Access•Michael Harris Bond, Miles Hewstone et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1985•Cited by: 6•References: 19

This research attempted to integrate Tajfel's (1978) social identity theory with self‐presentational concerns by exploring attributions about perceived group differences in behaviour. Undergraduate men and women at T…

  • When modesty fails: The social impact of group‐effacing attributions following success or failure

    Open Access•Michael Harris Bond, Chi‐Kwan Chiu et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1984•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This study explored how group members perceived a fellow group member who made either group‐serving or group‐effacing attributions following success or failure. Forty male undergraduates from the Chinese University co‐operated in pairs with a confederate on a demanding group task. After learning that their group's performance had exceeded or failed to meet a standard, the subjects heard their confederate‐partner make group‐effacing or group‐servi…
