Prevalence and Characteristics of Nonfatal Strangulation in Medical Forensic Examination
This study examined prevalence and characteristics of nonfatal strangulation (NFS) in medical forensic examinations from 2017 to 2023. A retrospective chart review of 1,396 records revealed 243 NFS cases (17.4%), prevalence increasing from 13.3% in 2017 to 22.2% in 2023. Adult NFS comprised 15.2% of cases, children 2.2%. Analysis of the NFS group revealed partner/spouse perpetrators were most common overall. Children were most commonly victimized…
The relationship between faculty diversity and graduation rates in higher education
This study examines the relationship between faculty racial/ethnic diversity and graduation rates of undergraduate students, in particular those from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority populations. Using IPEDS data, the researchers calculated a Diversity Score for each institution. Findings suggest U.S. faculty diversity is lower than in the U.S. national population. Overall graduation rates for underrepresented minority students of all …
The Positive Correlation Between Personal Need for Structure and the Mere Exposure Effect
It was predicted that the amount a person is affected by mere exposure would be positively correlated with their Personal Need for Structure (PNS). Forty participants rated unfamiliar Turkish words for pleasantness. As predicted by the mere exposure effect, the greater the participants' exposure, the more pleasant the words were rated. Participants were also asked to complete a PNS questionnaire. Individual PNS scores correlated with individual m…

Cross-National Outgroup Homogeneity
Research on cross-national stereotypes has been largely descriptive, primarily examining the content of such stereotypes rather than exploring more process-related issues concerning stereotype formation, use, and change. One particular component of stereotypes that has implications for these issues is the perceived variability of social categories. In this article we report data from white United States and South African samples on the perceived …

Majority — minority status and perceived ingroup variability revisited
Social identity theory predicts that ingroup members should see their group as more homogeneous when confronted by a large and presumably dominant outgroup. This prediction has been supported in a series of recent studies, all of which purport to show that the usual ingroup—outgroup difference in perceived variability, i.e. outgroup homogeneity, is reversed when the ingroup is in a minority position. In all of these studies, however, the ingroup—…
