Moses, a Scroll, and the Ark of the Covenant
Above the Torah shrine in the Dura-Europos synagogue, there are four paintings depicting four solo male figures, known as Panels I – IV . This paper revisits Panels II and IV . Relying on early photographs of Panel II , it argues that this painting depicts Moses at Mount Sinai with a scroll in his right hand. A Hebrew Liturgical Text from Dura-Europos (D.Pg. 25)
This paper offers a new edition of D.Pg. 25, the only Hebrew parchment to emerge from Dura-Europos. Since its discovery, scholars highlighted its similarities to the rabbinic Grace after Meals. The new arrangement of the fragments, readings, and reconstructions proposed here allow for a better appreciation of this text’s affinities with various Jewish literary corpora, from the Hebrew Bible, to Second Temple literature, to rabbinic writings, to t…
“Make Me a Sanctuary”
This contribution offers a new reading and reconstruction of an addition found in the text of Exod 24:18–25:1 as preserved in 4Q364 (4 QRP b ) 15. Alluding to Exod 25:8 (and possibly 9), it appears to elucidate the purpose of Moses’s forty days’ long stay atop Mount Sinai and serves as a nexus between Exod 24:18 and the following discussion of the Tabernacle

This contribution is the first attempt at deciphering a miniature opistograph 4Q148 included in Józef T. Milik’s DJD 6 edition of tefillin and mezuzot from Qumran Cave 4. It proposes that the partially folded recto of this tiny fragment contains a non- scriptural text. A handful of legible words may suggest a prayer. Its verso, inscribed by a different hand, appears to be a legal text, evoking monetary amounts, perhaps related to inheritance. Fol…
