  • Die Pastoralbriefe

    Stefan Krauter•BOOK•Die Pastoralbriefe•2026

  • Tim 4

Open Access•Stefan Krauter•ARTICLE•Journal of the Bible and its…•2025

Almost all contemporary commentaries claim that in 1 Timothy 4:13 Paul urges Timothy to read from Scripture and teach during worship services. This essay traces how this interpretation arose in the early modern period and became established in the 19th century. From antiquity to the Reformation, however, 1 Tim 4:13 was understood without exception to mean that Paul was urging Timothy to read Scripture for himself and to teach on that basis. This …

  • Ich weiß, wem ich mein Depositum anvertraut habe“ (2 Tim 1,12)

    Open Access•Stefan Krauter•ARTICLE•Biblische Zeitschrift•2024

In commentaries on the Pastoral Epistles, views differ widely on the interpretation of παραθήκη in 2 Tim 1:12. This article briefly presents the idiomatic use of παρα ( κατα ) θήκη in Greek texts and classifies therein its use in the Pastoral Epistles. On this basis, the most common interpretations of 2 Tim 1:12 are critically evaluated. An alternative interpretation of 2 Tim 2:12 is discussed. This has been proposed only twice before: the first …

    Open Access•Stefan Krauter•ARTICLE•Zwingliana•2024

In contemporary exegesis, the image prevails that the interpreters of the Reformation period read the Pauline Epistles as timeless theological treatises and not as situational and contextual letters. Melanchthon’s characterization of the Epistle to the Romans as a «doctrinae christianae compendium» is often cited as evidence for this. In contrast, the exemplary study of eight argumenta of commentaries on the Letter to the Romans from the 16th cen…

Open Access•Luca Baschera, Stefan Krauter et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Reformatorische Paulusauslegungen•2023

Σωφρονισμός in 2Tim 1,7

    Stefan Krauter•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für die neutestamentlic…•2023

Almost all current translations of 2Tim 1:7 understand σωφρονισμός in this verse as a synonym of σωφροσύνη. So do authoritative recent commentaries and dictionaries. This paper demonstrates that word formation makes this unlikely and that σωφρονισμός is never used synonymously with σωφροσύνη in ancient Greek literature. It is shown that the usual meaning of “making someone σώφρων” is possible and appropriate for 2Tim 1:7. A survey of ancient tran…

  • Lebenszeit und Lebenseinstellung bei Horaz und Paulus

Stefan Krauter, Manuel Nägele•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Theologie und…•2022

Horace takes up Epicurean philosophy in his ode to Leuconoe, albeit partly in ironic refraction. Paul draws on widespread anti-Epicurean polemics in 1 Cor 15. Despite the different starting points, both authors meet in the fact that one's conception of one's lifetime shapes one's attitude to life. Both plead in their own way for a carpe diem, a life in the present, which is oriented to the measure of the human.

  • Das „sterbende Weizenkorn“

    Stefan Krauter•ARTICLE•Biblische Zeitschrift•2022

Paul’s statement that seeds die after sowing in the soil before they germinate is often assessed as a commonly held view of antiquity. Some scholars even claim that it conforms to the scientific standards of ancient philosophy. This paper examines the sources cited as evidence for this claim and shows that it is untenable. Paul’s formulation is very unusual. His idea that seeds die does not make sense on the background of ancient botany. Similar,…

  • The Oxford Handbook of the Apocrypha

Stefan Krauter, Gerbern S Oegema•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of the Apocrypha•2021

The Oxford Handbook of the Apocrypha is meant to be a premier reference work for the study of the so-called Old Testament Apocrypha, important early Jewish texts that have become deutero-canonical for some Christian churches and non-canonical for other churches and that are of lasting cultural significance. In addition to the place given to the classical literary, historical, and tradition-historical introductory questions, this Handbook will foc…

  • Mercy and Monarchy

    Stefan Krauter•ARTICLE•Novum Testamentum•2021

This article compares De clementia , a somewhat neglected minor work of the Roman Stoic philosopher L. Annaeus Seneca, and Paul’s Letter to the Romans. First, Seneca’s ideas about rule as a god-given task of moral improvement of the subjects and the role of mercy ( clementia ) within it are analysed. Then, Seneca’s argument is compared with Paul’s thoughts concerning salvation by grace in his Letter to the Romans. Seneca’s short political treatis…

In his inaugural lecture of 1256, Thomas Aquinas develops a disposition of the biblical canon together with an interpretation of the sequence of books. Thomas structures the canon as a double Tanakh, with the Old Testament revolving around the law and the New Testament being based on the giving of the grace in the Gospels. Thomas uses traditional dispositions of the canon (especially Hieronymus), but his work is also based on a careful exegesis o…

  • Adam und Romulus. Lateinische Dichtung in der Paulusexegese

    Stefan Krauter•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für die neutestamentlic…•2020

In New Testament exegesis, quotations from Latin literature of the Early Principate are mostly used as evidence of Roman imperial ideology. This essay aims to show that it is worthwhile to deal more carefully with such literary texts. Horace’s seventh and sixteenth epodes are compared with passages from the letter to the Romans. Using the myth of Romulus’ fratricide, Horace expresses his despair during the civil wars. He imagines a fictional resc…

Rom 13:1-7 is not the apostle Paul's »doctrine of state«. But neither is it an advice for the Roman Christians to avoid political turmoil. The text should be taken seriously as a theological reflection on power. Paul's arguments are influenced by his religious convictions as well as by the political and social circumstances in the Roman Empire.

    G. N. This article argues that 5 Ezra is better understood in its relation to earlier Ezra materials. 5 Ezra is a radically anti-Jewish, Christian supersessionist reinterpretation of the canonical books of Ezra and Nehemia as well as the Jewish apocalypse cal…

In Rom 7:7b, Paul claims that the law gives sin the opportunity to lead humans into the miserable state of akrasia (weakness of will). He draws on an argument from ancient moral philosophy: Prohibitions can have paradoxical effects. They make people think about the prohibited crime and thus have the potential to make them commit this crime.
