  • Stochastic contingency machines feeding on meaning

    Open Access•Richard Gross•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2025

In this paper, I reflect on the puzzle that machine learning presents to social theory to develop an account of its distinct impact on social reality. I start by presenting how machine learning has presented a challenge to social theory as a research subject comprising both familiar and alien characteristics (1.). Taking this as an occasion for theoretical inquiry, I then propose a conceptual framework to investigate how algorithmic models of soc…

  • Situating machine learning – On the calibration of problems in practice

Richard Gross, Susann Wagenknecht•ARTICLE•Distinktion Journal of Social…•2023•References: 17

In this paper, we employ John Dewey’s notion of the situation as an analytic lens for observing and theorizing machine learning. Based on two ethnographic case studies in art and science, we account for machine learning as practice and examine the dynamics of the situations it gives rise to. Following Dewey, our observations focus on the transformation of situations from an initial state of indeterminacy through to problematizations and their res…

  • Why La Salle Hung French Fortunes on a Western Branch

Richard Gro, Richard Gross et al.•ARTICLE•Terrae Incognitae•2023

In 1684, La Salle proposed to establish a naval base for France on the doorstep of New Spain by sea. The site he chose was a fork in the Mississippi River 180 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. This was where Bayou Lafourche formed a western branch, a distributary of the great river. When the difficult captain of his frigate escort vanished in a fog and headed south in January 1685, La Salle was forced to pursue him for more than 2 weeks down the Tex…

Richard Gro, Richard Gross•ARTICLE•Journal of the Illinois State…•2022

ROBERT CAVELIER, SIEUR DE LA SALLE encountered four villages of the Illinois nation during his first journey to Illinois in 1679–80. Only the summer village of the migratory Kaskaskia has ever been correctly identified. It lies on the upper Illinois River, less than a mile and a half east of the landmark known as Starved Rock. As “the Zimmerman site,” it has hosted archaeological excavations in 1941, 1970, and 1991.1 However, two small winter vil…

  • Mapping the Chicago Portage

    Richard Gro, Richard Gross•ARTICLE•Terrae Incognitae•2022

On their return to Canada in 1673, Louis Jolliet’s group became the first Europeans documented to have passed from the Mississippi River watershed to the Great Lakes watershed via the Chicago Portage. This carrying place, between the Des Plaines and Chicago Rivers, would remain a politically and commercially important location during the fur trade era. A podcast by a group of Chicago historians, writers, and artists has promoted the assertion tha…

The 1754 incident precipitating the French and Indian War took place over a disputed claim between France and England for the Ohio River Valley.
