  • Social Media's kangaroo court and censorship

    Open Access•Jonathan W Caudill•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2024

This autoethnography explores the use of censorship as a consequential function of social media moderation. Reflections on my time as a community reviewer for a social media platform focus on censorship processes observed on a geographically-based social media platform, OurStreet (a pseudonym). I discovered that censorship occurs through mechanisms that permit subjective overreach of aggressive tactics that create marginalized perspectives and us…

This study examines patterns of violent institutional misconduct among a cohort of serious juvenile offenders who were incarcerated in state-level juvenile correctional facilities and then state adult prison institutions. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to various conduct and behavior problems within juvenile delinquents, but fewer studies focused on these associations among specific forensic typologies of offending. Utilizing data from 3382 institutionalized delinquents in Texas, logistic regression models indicated multiple associations between ACEs and forensic typologies in both adjusted and unadjusted models, with sexual abuse and physical abu…

  • The Impact of Adult Prison Transfer on the Recidivism Outcomes of Blended-Sentenced Juvenile Delinquents

    Open Access•Chad R Trulson, Jessica M Craig et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2020

Juvenile justice systems today have various methods to sanction serious, violent, and chronic delinquents. One of these methods is through blended sentencing. Broadly, blended sentencing processes allow for juvenile justice sanctioning first and then, if needed, criminal justice sanctioning—including placement in adult prisons. The current study examines the recidivism outcomes of blended-sentenced youth transferred to adult prisons following a p…

Adverse childhood experiences are associated with an array of health, psychiatric, and behavioral problems including antisocial behavior. Criminologists have recently utilized adverse childhood experiences as an organizing research framework and shown that adverse childhood experiences are associated with delinquency, violence, and more chronic/severe criminal careers. However, much less is known about adverse childhood experiences vis-à-vis spec…

  • Lost Causes

Matt Delisi, Chad R Trulson et al.•BOOK•Lost Causes•2016

What should be done with minors who kill, maim, defile, and destroy the lives of others? The state of Texas deals with some of its most serious and violent youthful offenders through "determinate sentencing," a unique sentencing structure that blends parts of the juvenile and adult justice systems. Once adjudicated via determinate sentencing, offenders are first incarcerated in the Texas Youth Commission (TYC). As they approach age eighteen, they…
