  • Soil health metrics for assessment of floodplain restorations

Open Access•Joseph G Galella, Md Moklesur Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

While healthy soils are critical for stream and floodplain restoration, little guidance is available to restoration practitioners on which soil metrics to measure and when to expect the signs of recovery post-restoration. Here, we address this important knowledge gap through a study of 37 soil metrics for 11 restored floodplains and two reference sites across a chronosequence of 0–22 years. Soil metrics differed in their sensitivity and response …

  • Using problem-oriented policing to address police problems through the study of body-worn camera footage

Open Access•Wendi Pollock, Sarah Scott et al.•ARTICLE•The Police Journal Theory…•2021

Herman Goldstein’s concept of ‘problem-oriented policing’ (POP) emphasized data gathering, analytics, and pattern identification to allow police to more effectively address problems faced by citizens in their communities. One of the most pressing problems in modern policing, however, is how departments should respond to accusations that police are not fair and consistent in their dealings with the public. In this article, the research team examin…

  • Recommendations for a National Research Agenda in UDL: Outcomes From the UDL-IRN Preconference on Research

Open Access•Sean J Smith, Kavita Rao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Disability Policy…•2019•Cited by: 2

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that continues to receive increased attention at federal and state levels. The benefits of UDL include providing an approach to curriculum and instructional design that creates flexible instructional goals, methods, materials, and assignments. Despite the growing popularity of UDL in national policies, measuring the implementation of the UDL framework remains elusive. In March 2017, the research …

  • Gods, Objects, and Ritual Practice

Open Access•Annewies van den Hoeck, Sheramy D Bundrick et al.•BOOK•Gods, Objects, and Ritual…•2017

Conversations about materiality have helped forge a common meeting ground for scholars seeking to integrate images, sites, texts, and implements in their approach to religion in the ancient Mediterranean. The fourteen chapters in this volume explore the productivity of these approaches, with case studies from Israel, Athens, Rome, Sicily, and North Africa . The results foreground the capacity of material approaches to cast lighton the cultural cr…

  • Using Regional Economic Models to Estimate the Costs of Infrastructure Failures: The Cost of a Limited Interruption in Electric Power in the Los Angeles Region

    Open Access•James E Moore, Eric Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Public Works Management & Policy•2006

An integrated model of losses caused by infrastructure failures is presented together with an example application to interruptions in electric power. The model estimates how these losses affect the metropolitan economy. This measurement accounts for direct, indirect, and induced costs that can result from infrastructure failures. The procedure advances the information provided by transportation and activity system analysis techniques in ways that…

  • Canada's increasing housing affordability burdens

    Eric G Moore, Eric Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2004•Cited by: 25•References: 13

This study uses national survey and census data on shelter costs and income to describe changes in the proportion and the number of low‐income households spending more than half of their income on shelter. While affordability problems increased consistently over the last two decades for almost all classes of households, the problems are highly concentrated among those with low‐incomes. Women household maintainers are significantly more likely to …

  • The Unequal Case for Animal Rights

    Eric Moore•ARTICLE•Environmental Ethics•2002

I argue that the equal rights views of Tom Regan and Evelyn B. Pluhar must be rejected because they have unacceptable consequences. My objection is similar to one made in the literature by Mary Anne Warren, but I develop it in more detail and defend it from several plausible responses that an equal rights theorist might make. I formulate a theory, a moderate form of perfectionism, that makes a value distinction between moral agents and moral pati…

  • Desert, Virtue, and Justice

    Eric Moore•ARTICLE•Social Theory and Practice•2000

I endorse an old view that distributive justice can best be understood as people getting what they deserve. John Rawls has several famous arguments to show that such a view is false. I criticize those arguments, but agree that more work needs to be done on the clarification and explanation of the concept of desert in order for the old view to be more than a platitude. I then criticize attempted analyses of the concept of desert by Feinberg, Klein…
