  • UK Panel Data on Social Work Service Users

Nina Maxwell, Jonathan Scourfield et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 11

Panel studies are an under-used resource in social work research. A mapping exercise was undertaken to establish the current coverage of social work and social care-related topics in UK panel studies. A search was conducted of the Survey Question Bank and the World Wide Web, which resulted in ten panel studies being retained for initial exploration. The aim of this initial exploration was simply to establish the number and proportion of social wo…

  • Exploring Coping Factors amongst Men Who Were Sexually Abused in Childhood

    Paul O’leary, P J O'Leary et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 31

Men who were sexually abused in childhood are overrepresented in mental health and other clinical populations. There is heterogeneity in outcomes for such men and a substantial number develop coping strategies that minimise negative consequences of abuse. However, little research has been undertaken with abused men to understand the nature of their coping. This paper reports on one arm of a major study of mental health outcomes for Australian men…

    Paul O’leary, Nick Gould•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 30

In the Western world, men are particularly vulnerable to suicide, so it is important to undertake research that helps explain the manifestation of suicidality. This is one of the few studies to date that have researched men who were sexually abused in childhood and their presentation of suicidal ideation, much of the previous research with this focus having been restricted to women. The study draws on a clinical sample of 147 Australian men who w…

  • Social Work and the Changing Face of the Digital Divide

Jan Steyaert, Nick Gould•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 9

In this article, the concept of digital divide and its relation to social exclusion is analysed. After describing the several facets of the digital divide, the question is asked whether the divide is widening or narrowing? The definition of digital divide is reconsidered and the article argues that access to the technology alone is but a very rudimentary indicator of actually making use of digital opportunities. This is expanded in the section on…

  • Using Repertory Grid Technique with Participants in Parenting Programmes--A Pilot Study

Nick Gould, Hilary Gould et al.•ARTICLE•Practice•2004

Parenting programmes have become a core element of New Labour's approach to strengthening families. Although parenting programmes originally were focused on the parents of young children, they are now also seen as an important intervention to support parents of adolescents. This paper suggests that repertory grids can be an illuminating method for identifying the aspects of construing parenting of adolescents that are influenced through participa…

  • Globalization, social work, and social welfare

Richard Pugh, Nick Gould•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 5

This paper presents a critical review of globalization as explicated in the social work literature. It argues that writers about globalization and social work have so far accepted an unprolematized and undifferentiated construction of the theory of globalization which does not engage with the significant differences that exist between different accounts of globalization. In doing so they implicitly reproduce neo-liberal assumptions about the role…

Although originally the domain of administrative and management staff, now core operational staff are also confronted with making increased use of technology. The way information management in human services is shaped is not only dependent upon technology, but increasingly seems to result from an…
