Field Education in the Shadow of Covid-19
Professor Marion Bogo contributed substantial work in theorizing and conducting research to strengthen the landscape of social work field education. As a tribute, this article updates her 2022 scoping review synthesizing the literature on social work field instruction (i.e., published between 2017 and 2019). We synthesized the current empirical literature as it relates to COVID-19 and field education adjustments and innovations. Using Arksey and …
Defining the profession? Exploring an international definition of social work in the China context
Global social work defies concise definition. In this article, the key terms of the definition of social work formulated by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) are critically analysed. It is argued that this definition cannot claim to be ‘universal’ given the assumptions on which it is built and the rapidly changing global society in which social work is undertaken. This is demonstrated in the form of an analysis of social welfa…
Correcting misconceptions about the development of social work in China
In this brief debate article we respond to Cunfu Jia's criticism of our article ‘Defining the Profession?’ ( International Journal of Social Work 16: 382–389). We address the issue of ‘evidence’ and the issue of the applicability to China of the global definition of social work. We suggest that although debate articles by their very nature risk generating false dichotomies, they provide an important and welcome opportunity to explore commonality …
Social care research
English This article examines how systematic reviews might best address social care research. In the context of broader methodological debate, it draws on recent first-hand experience of undertaking systematic reviews in this field, to propose that research inclusion, quality assessment and synthesis should be guided by certain key characteristics of social care knowledge, research and practice. It explores the potential of the TAPUPAS framework,…
What do we know about partnership with service users and carers in social work education and how robust is the evidence base
Partnership work with service users and carers in social work education is a policy requirement, and it is also central to the anti-oppressive and rights-based values of social work. This paper reports research findings which are drawn from an educational context, but are also relevant to the wider field of health and social care. The research team undertook a systematic knowledge review using the Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and …
Orientation to self-directed learning
Self-directed learning is assuming a more central place in higher education. However, there is little in the literature about the preparation of students for this approach, perhaps because such preparation may appear paradoxical. A social work course in which self-directed learning plays a major role provides the focus of this paper. A study indicated that more attention could usefully be paid in the course to the process of preparing students fo…
