Attraction Agglomeration and Destination Agglomeration
We examine the effect of attraction and destination agglomerations on tourism revenues and tourist flows. Using data from 184 national scenic areas in China for the 2012 to 2017 period as the case study for our two-level agglomeration model, we find that the attraction agglomeration yields cooperative competition at the micro level of tourist districts. This co-existence of compatible and competitive effects determines not only individual nationa…
Natural resource extraction and environmental sustainability in Africa
We examine the effect of natural resource extraction on environmental sustainability in Africa. Using comprehensive panel data from 30 countries for the 2004–2021 period, we find that natural resource extraction reduces environmental sustainability, particularly in resource‐poor countries. However, the nature of this nexus is time‐varying, with natural resource extraction exerting a positive and negative impact on environmental sustainability in …
Achieving environmental sustainability in Africa
We investigate the causal impact of the development of financial institutions on environmental sustainability in Africa. Drawing on a distinctive panel data set encompassing 34 countries from 1980 to 2017, with carbon emissions serving as an indicator of environmental sustainability, we discover that enhanced development of financial institutions leads to increased carbon emissions, especially in relation to the depth of these institutions. Furth…
Do extensive producer services promote manufacturing agglomeration? Evidence from territorial servitisation in Northeast China
We examine the effect of territorial servitisation on the spatial development of the manufacturing sector in Northeast China. Using data from 34 prefectural cities from 2003 to 2016, we find that the concentration of producer services promotes manufacturing agglomeration in the region. The novelty of our paper lies in the external instruments used to control for circular causation in the service–manufacturing nexus and spatial spill-overs of terr…
