Hikikomori is a severe and prolonged form of social withdrawal observed in young people across industrialized countries. This study examined associations among attachment insecurity, shame, and hikikomori symptoms and investigated their unique and relative contributions to one another to better understand their interconnected roles in social withdrawal. Participants were 137 non-clinical adolescents (54 males, 83 females; age range 12-22 years) w…
On Your Own
Hikikomori is an extreme form of social withdrawal that has been originally described in Japan but that is emergent in many other developed and industrialized countries. The present exploratory study was conducted in The Netherlands and aimed to examine psychopathological and psychosocial correlates of hikikomori symptoms as measured with the Hikikomori Questionnaire-25 (HQ-25) in a convenience population of 122 non-clinical adolescents and young…
Disconfirmation of confirmation bias
The current experiment investigated whether counter-attitudinal information can alter a pre-existing attitude and the accompanying confirmation bias. Sixty-three non-clinical children (9–12 years) were shown pictures of a positive animal (quokka) or a dangerous-looking animal (aye aye). For both animals attitudes and information seeking patterns were obtained. Next, they received counter-attitudinal information of each animal; attitudes and seeki…
Self-Compassion Correlates of Anxiety and Depression Symptoms in Youth
The protective nature of self-compassion can be established by both measures. Caution is advised with the use of the uncompassionate self-responding scales included in the SCS-Y as they appear to measure vulnerability rather than protection
The Influence of Negative Feedback and Social Rank on Feelings of Shame and Guilt
This experimental study examined the role of negative feedback and social rank in the experience of self-conscious emotions, shame and guilt, in typically developing children aged 8 to 13 years. Participants were tested by means of a vignette paradigm in which feedback and social rank were systematically manipulated and levels of shame and guilt were assessed after listening to each of the vignettes. In addition, children completed a set of quest…
Shame on Me! Self-Conscious Emotions and Big Five Personality Traits and Their Relations to Anxiety Disorders Symptoms in Young, Non-Clinical Adolescents
This study explored the relations between self-conscious emotions, personality traits, and anxiety disorders symptoms in non-clinical youths. One-hundred-and-eighteen adolescents aged 12-15 years completed the brief shame and guilt questionnaire for children (BSGQ-C) and items of the youth self-report (YSR) to measure shame and guilt, the big five personality questionnaire for children, and the youth anxiety measure for DSM-5. Results for shame i…
The Association Between Callous–Unemotional Traits, Externalizing Problems, and Gender in Predicting Cognitive and Affective Morality Judgments in Adolescence
Morality deficits have been linked to callous-unemotional traits and externalizing problems in response to moral dilemmas, but these associations are still obscure in response to antisocial acts in adolescence. Limited evidence on young boys suggested that callous-unemotional traits and externalizing problems were associated with affective but not cognitive morality judgments. The present study investigated these associations in a community sampl…

Validation of the Dutch Reactive Proactive Questionnaire (RPQ)
This study reports reliability and validity of the Dutch Reactive-Proactive Aggression Questionnaire (RPQ). In total, 845 participants completed the RPQ along with other measures of aggression. Groups consisted of non-offender participants, criminal offenders, youngsters (age 6-18), and adults (age above 18). Test-retest stability in a subsample of 324 childhood arrestees was good (all ICC's > 0.41). A confirmatory factor analysis supported the s…
Stress-Reactive Rumination, Negative Cognitive Style, and Stressors in Relationship to Depressive Symptoms in Non-Clinical Youth
The role of cognitive vulnerability in the development of depressive symptoms in youth might depend on age and gender. The current study examined cognitive vulnerability models in relationship to depressive symptoms from a developmental perspective. For that purpose, 805 youth (aged 10-18, 59.9% female) completed self-report measures. Stress-reactive rumination was strongly related to depressive symptoms. Negative cognitive style (i.e., tendency …
Personality and Temperament Correlates of Pain Catastrophizing in Young Adolescents
Pain catastrophizing is generally viewed as an important cognitive factor underlying chronic pain. The present study examined personality and temperament correlates of pain catastrophizing in a sample of young adolescents (N = 132). Participants completed the Pain Catastrophizing Scale for Children, as well as scales for measuring sensitivity of the behavioral inhibition and behavioral activation systems (BIS-BAS), and various reactive and regula…
First Psychometric Evaluation of a Disease-Specific Questionnaire for Children's Behavior Related to Otitis Media with Effusion
The major goal of the present study is a psychometric analysis of two age-specific questionnaires for the assessment of Otitis Media with Effusion-specific behavior in young children, intended for use in case-finding. In total, 172 children ages 12 to 24 mo. and 121 children ages 24 to 48 mo. were available initially. Caregivers completed the questionnaires on two occasions before tympanostomy tube insertion and once 6 wk. later. Factor analysis …

Correlates of the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale in Delinquent Adolescents
Correlations between scores on the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale and a number of relevant personality characteristics, i.e., intelligence, memory, social inadequacy, social desirability, and fantasy proneness, were examined in a sample of 71 delinquent boys. Analysis showed that intelligence and memory were negatively related to suggestibility scores. That is, lower memory and intelligence were associated with higher suggestibility. No signific…
Children's Somatization Symptoms
The objectives of this study were to examine associations between trait anxiety, anxiety sensitivity, and learning experiences, on the one hand, and children's somatization symptoms, on the other hand. A sample of 190 nonclinical children completed the trait anxiety scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children, the Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index, and the Children's Somatization Inventory, and were interviewed about learning experi…

Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders and Teacher-Reported School Functioning of Normal Children
Correlations between scores on the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale, a questionnaire for measuring symptoms of anxiety disorders and a report of school functioning by teachers were computed for 317 primary school children and 13 teachers in The Netherlands. Analysis showed a small but significant negative correlation between scores for total anxiety and school functioning (r = -.20, p < .001). The finding is consistent with the notion that high sy…
Attachment Style and Self-Reported Aggression
The present study examined the relationship between attachment style and self-reported aggression in a sample of young women (N = 139). Analysis showed that 27.3% of the subjects classified themselves as insecurely, i.e., avoidantly or ambivalently, attached by means of the Adult Attachment Questionnaire of Hazan and Shaver. In addition, the insecurely attached subjects had elevated anger and hostility compared to securely attached subjects
Validation of the Dutch version of the aggression questionnaire in adolescent male offenders
This study examined the construct validity of the Dutch version of Buss and Perry’s Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) in 73 adolescent male offenders aged 12 to 18 years who were participating in a residential rehabilitation program. There was a strong positive association between the Hostility subscale of the AQ and psychological and physical symptoms. The nature of this connection was discussed. It was argued that the Hostility subscale measures so…
Self-Reported Attachment Style, Anxiety, and Depression in Children
The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationship between self-reported attachment styles, on the one hand, and levels of anxiety symptoms and depression, on the other hand, in a sample of 12-year-old children ( N = 91). Children completed a simplified version of Hazan and Shaver's (1987) single-item measure of attachment style and self-report measures of anxiety and depression. Results showed that 20.9% of the children classified …
