Social and Emotional Learning Programs and Students’ Prosocial Behavior
This meta-analysis describes the effectiveness of school-based social and emotional learning (SEL) programs for K–12 students’ prosocial behavior. Prosocial behavior, defined as voluntary behavior intended to benefit others, is a critical social competency. To date, the field lacks a clear synthesis of the effectiveness of SEL programs in promoting students’ prosocial behavior due to broad or disparate operationalizations of prosocial behavior in…
Reducing Teacher Burnout and Promoting Student Prosocial Behavior Using the Echo Telementoring Model in Middle Schools
Reducing teacher burnout and improving student behavior are national challenges. This study reports on a randomized controlled trial testing effectiveness of a telementoring professional development (PD) model, called ECHO, to build teachers' capacity to promote their students' prosocial behavior while supporting their own well‐being. The sample included 109 middle school teachers (59 intervention, 50 waitlist control) and their 1091 students. Th…
Development and Validation of the Prosocial Behavior in School Scale
This study reports on the development, factor structure, and validity indicators of the Prosocial Behavior in School Scale (PBSS) among 4264 sixth‐ to eighth‐grade students in the United States. The final PBSS is a 12‐item self‐report measure of students' prosocial behavior in a specific classroom. The PBSS was developed using student descriptions of authentic prosocial behaviors. Factor analysis suggested that responses to the PBSS were represen…

Five key questions educators ask about SEL
Schools have become increasingly interested in social-emotional learning (SEL) over the past decade, and that interest has grown due to concern about student well-being resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is confusion around SEL. Christi Bergin, Christina Cipriano, Tia Barnes, Shannon B. Wanless, researchers who have studied and designed SEL for decades, respond to questions frequently asked by educators as they consider an SEL a…

Implementing Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (Capta) Requirements to Serve Substance-Exposed Newborns
The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) of 2003 requires states to develop procedures to notify child protective services of newborns prenatally exposed to illegal substances and develop plans of safe care. In 2005 the Administration for Children and Families awarded grants to four programs to develop models for implementing these CAPTA requirements. Although the programs were quite varied, they encountered similar challenges collabo…
Attachment in the Classroom
Attachment in substance‐exposed toddlers
Prenatal substance exposure is linked to adverse outcomes in children. Some adverse outcomes may result from insecure attachment and low‐quality caregiving rather than from substance exposure. Little is known about the caregiving of polysubstance‐using mothers. To address this, low‐income mothers ( n = 41) with their substance‐exposed 12‐month‐olds were compared with a nonexposed group case‐matched for other risk factors. Maternal sensitivity and…
