Karl Polanyi's Political and Economic Thought: A Critical Guide
The work of Karl Polanyi has become a central reference point for scholars in a variety of traditions and disciplines within the social sciences, including international relations, international political economy, economic sociology and economic anthropology. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to Polanyi's political and economic thought by examining the key themes that run throughout it: economic ideas, commodification, money, the gold…
How Is Religiousness Associated With Adolescent Risk‐Taking? The Roles of Emotion Regulation and Executive Function
Existing literature has demonstrated an association between higher adolescent religiousness and lower risk-taking via higher self-regulation. This study sought to elucidate the roles of emotion regulation and executive function as parallel mediators in the link between religiousness and risk-taking in a sample of 167 adolescents (mean age = 14.13 years, 52% male, 82% White at Time 1). Longitudinal results across three waves utilizing structural e…
Religious Social Support Protects against Social Risks for Adolescent Substance Use
We used a social developmental perspective to identify how prominent social contexts influence substance use during adolescence. Longitudinal data were collected annually from 167 parent-adolescent dyads over four years. We investigated whether parent substance use was related to adolescent substance use directly and indirectly via peer substance use and whether these associations were moderated by religious social support. Structural equation mo…
Staying the Course: On the Value of Social Studies of Science in Resistance to the “Post‐Truth” Movement
Scientific knowledge has been under attack recently, especially during and from the Trump administration. This article discusses the value of research in social studies of science in relation to scientific practice and post‐truth attacks on science. This literature analyzes the expert work and social values that enter into the production of evidence, the development and testing of methods, and the construction of theoretical and epistemological f…
Structural Home Environment Effects on Developmental Trajectories of Self-Control and Adolescent Risk Taking
Positive and Negative Affect and Adolescent Adjustment: Moderation Effects of Prefrontal Functioning
We examined whether cognitive control moderates the effects of emotion on adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptomatology in a longitudinal study of 138 adolescents. Self-reported positive affect (PA) and negative affect and behavioral and neural indicators of cognitive control, indexed by performance and prefrontal hemodynamic response during a cognitive interference task, were collected at Time 1. Self-reported internalizing and exter…
Today's decisions, Tomorrow's outcomes: Does self-control explain the educational smoking gradient
Positive and negative associations between adolescents' religiousness and health behaviors via self-regulation
It has been proposed that self-regulation may be the explanatory mechanism for the relation between religiousness and positive health behaviors. However, different religious motivations have differential effects on a variety of health related outcomes, which may explain the adverse effects of religiousness found in some studies. The current study hypothesized that higher identification as religious motivation would be linked to higher health-prom…
The Limits of World Literature
This essay examines recent work on world literature theory, with a particular focus on those theorists who treat individual texts as in dialogue with the circulations of linguistic and cultural translation. I treat world literature as the theory without an object and make the counterintuitive claim that its objectlessness makes it well suited for leaving behind antiquated modes of categorizing and canonizing so‐called world texts, in order to mak…
Adolescents’ Religiousness and Substance Use Are Linked via Afterlife Beliefs and Future Orientation
Although religiousness has been identified as a protective factor against adolescent substance use, processes through which these effects may operate are unclear. The current longitudinal study examined sequential mediation of afterlife beliefs and future orientation in the relation between adolescent religiousness and cigarette, alcohol, and marijuana use. Participants included 131 adolescents (mean age at Time 1 = 12 years) at three time points…
Delay Discounting Mediates Parent–Adolescent Relationship Quality and Risky Sexual Behavior for Low Self-Control Adolescents
The Nation after the Age of the Global
In his innovative and often transformative book, National Consciousness and Literary Cosmopolitics: Postcolonial Literature in a Global Age (henceforth NC), Weihsin Gui takes up the question of how postcolonialism should inform our understanding of the global moment by re-invigorating literature's relationship to nationalism. Analyzing works by Kazuo Ishiguro, Derek Walcott, Shirley Geok-Lin Lim, Twan Eng Tan, and Preeta Samarasan, he does what v…
Processes Linking Parents’ and Adolescents’ Religiousness and Adolescent Substance Use: Monitoring and Self-Control
Introduction: A post-Polanyian political economy for our times
2014 is the seventieth anniversary of the publication of Karl Polanyi's The great transformation and the fiftieth anniversary of its author's passing. This special issue celebrates these markers by bringing together a collection of critical engagements with Polanyi's work which, whilst sympathetic to his intellectual aims, ward against any straightforward application to contemporary issues. In so doing, it suggests that part of the value of Polan…
The performer’s experience: A case for using qualitative (phenomenological) methodologies in music performance research
The experience of the performer is fundamental to the creation of any music performance, but has as yet received relatively little attention from researchers. Empirical investigation has been undertaken across a range of disciplines (mainly psychology, physiology and psychoacoustics), but hitherto using predominantly quantitative methods. This theoretical article seeks to build on more recent trends towards qualitative research, with the aim of r…
