Affective temperaments, self-schemas, and their interplay with emotional distress
This study provides the first empirical evidence that self-schemas act as mediating mechanisms linking affective temperaments to affective symptoms. Our findings thereby support a biopsychosocial model of emotional distress, founded on the interaction between genetically-influenced temperaments and socially-constructed self-schemas. Consequently, therapeutic interventions designed to modify self-schemas may represent an effective strategy for mit…
Disorganized schizotypy and neuroticism in daily life
Differential trajectories of tobacco smoking in people at ultra-high risk for psychosis
These findings suggests that in UHR subjects persistent tobacco smoking is associated with an unfavorable course of psychotic symptoms, whereas decrease in the number of cigarettes smoked is associated with improvement in affective symptoms. Future research into smoking cessation interventions in the early stages of psychoses is required to shine light on the potential of modifying smoking behavior and its relation to clinical outcomes
Schizotypal ambivalence is associated with schizophrenia-spectrum and borderline personality traits in young adults
Self-Schemas and Self-Esteem Discrepancies in Subclinical Paranoia
Background : Self-concepts are being intensively investigated in relation to paranoia, but research has shown some contradictory findings. Studying subclinical phenomena in a non-clinical population should allow for a clearer understanding given that clinical confounding factors are avoided. We explored self-esteem, self-schemas, and implicit/explicit self-esteem discrepancies in three non-clinical groups with different psychopathological traits …
Emotional Comprehension Is Not Related to Duration of Distress from Daily Life Events
The main aim of this paper is to analyze to what extent insight (i.e., mentalization referring to one's own mental state) moderates recovering from daily life events. A total of 110 participants (84.5% women; mean age: M = 21.5; SD = 3.2) filled in the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24) and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-R), and were interviewed about impairment derived from daily life events (everyday life stresses) during the past year…
Ecological Validity of Expressed Emotion in Early Psychosis
Expressed emotion (EE) is an aspect of the family environment that influences the course of multiple forms of psychopathology. However, there is limited research about how EE dimensions [i.e., criticism and emotional over-involvement (EOI)] are expressed in real-world settings. The present study used experience sampling methodology to investigate: 1) the criterion and construct validity of daily-life, momentary measures of criticism and EOI, and …
Emerging Adulthood and Prospective Depression
An Exploratory Study of Sex Differences in Divergent Thinking and Creative Personality among College Subjects
Possible sex differences have been explored in two different domains of creativity: creative cognition (with the ‘Parallel Bars’ subtest of the Torrance Creative Battery) and creative personality (measured by the Creative Personality Scale). Analyses with 44 female and 15 male normal college students show that differences on the personality measure favoured men
