  • Glaciares y Constitución Aproximaciones al Debate Constitucional y Ciudadano Chileno, 1980-2023

Open Access•Sofìa Montserrat Roldán Bugueño, José Ragas et al.•ARTICLE•Historia Ambiental Latinoamericana…•2026

The 2019-2023 period in Chile was particularly unusual. A massive protest challenged the political and economic system inherited from the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, paving the way to vote for a new Constitution that replaced the one approved prior to the return of democracy. The public debate around the content and spirit of the new Constitution also witnessed the emergence of climate change and glaciers as political agents. Drawing from o…

  • Snow trade and access to cold temperatures in Lima between the wars of independence and the establishment of free trade (1820-1850)

    Open Access•José Ragas•ARTICLE•Historia Crítica•2025

Context/Objective: This article examines the population of Lima’s access to locally extracted natural cold temperatures (snow) during the first half of the 19th century. Then, colonial structures that facilitated its production were dismantled and replaced by ice imports from abroad, resulting from changes in transportation and the emergence of a global cold market, of which the Pacific coast was a part. Methodology: The essay employs a qualitati…

  • Is glacier science undone, or just enough for a just transition? Reflections from Andean Mines

Open Access•Javiera Barandiarán, Paola Araya et al.•ARTICLE•Tapuya Latin American Science…•2025•References: 68

Undone science refers to missing areas of scientific knowledge needed for decision-making or public policy. Though the term has become ubiquitous in STS research, it is hard to distinguish undone science from other possibilities like uncertainty, secrecy, or even unknowability. This paper advances a framework for distinguishing undone science from these other scenarios and applies it to the case of glacier management in Chile. Drawing on observat…

  • How to Design a (Cybernetic) Revolution: Chileans Remember Salvador Allende's Techno-Utopian Project

    José Ragas•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2024

The recent commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet offered an opportunity to explore unknown aspects of daily life before and during the dictatorship. This essay focuses on one particular exhibition ( How to Design a Revolution: The Chilean Road to Design ), which featured a complete reconstruction of the Cybersyn operation room. Based on participant observation, the essay argues that the int…

  • History of Pandemics in Latin America

    José Ragas•ARTICLE•Isis•2023•References: 19

This essay revisits the scholarly production around three major pandemics in the region: (a) the Third Plague Pandemic; (b) HIV/AIDS in the 1980s; and (c) COVID-19. The essay aims to provide a comprehensive set of resources (both printed and digital) in four languages (Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French) to examine how scholars have approached these phenomena and how their scope and interpretations have changed over time. Historians of heal…

  • Covid-19, the Chinese diaspora, and the enduring legacy of racism in Peru

    Open Access•José Ragas, Patricia Palma•ARTICLE•História Ciências Saúde-Manguinhos•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 4

The coronavirus pandemic has exposed a global tendency throughout history to blame immigrants for propagating epidemics. Chinese individuals were thus targeted during past public health crises in Peru, but during the current coronavirus pandemic racist notions painting people of Chinese descent as "agents of contagion" diminished significantly. Here we examine three major epidemics (yellow fever, the bubonic plague, and covid-19) to demonstrate t…

  • Turning Big Brother upside down: Revisiting surveillance from Latin America

    Open Access•José Ragas•ARTICLE•History Compass•2021•References: 14

This essay discusses the emergence of a vibrant body of research embracing surveillance in Modern Latin America. By focusing on a specific yet complex region, scholars have expanded the original framework associated with the term, applying this new lens to periods ranging from after the Wars of Independence to contemporary episodes. Moreover, the examination of surveillance in this region reveals how researchers have engaged not only with trendin…

  • Archiving the Chilean Revolution

    Open Access•José Ragas•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2021

In October 2019, Santiago de Chile became the epicenter of a violent and massive protest against social inequality. Known as the Estallido Social (the Social Unrest), Chileans took to the streets seeking to dismantle the pervasive social and economic system inherited from Augusto Pinochet's regime established half a century ago. Drawing from participant observations and interviews conducted during the protest, this essay examines the multiple eff…

    Open Access•Patricia Palma, José Ragas•ARTICLE•Salud Colectiva•2019

The characterization of non-professional healers as "quacks" or "impostors" has influenced much of how such actors have been perceived by public opinion and in academic research. As a result of this, a divide has emerged between professional physicians, on the one hand, and those who acquired their knowledge in a traditional and non-academic way, on the other. This work questions the alleged divide between these two groups in the health field in …

  • A Starving Revolution: ID Cards and Food Rationing in Bolivarian Venezuela

    Open Access•José Ragas•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2017•Cited by: 1

In this essay, I examine the controversy around the “Carnet de la Patria,” a national identity card issued in Venezuela in December 2016. I argue that this ID card belongs to a larger project of surveillance and regulation of identity developed by the Bolivarian Revolution and implemented by the late Hugo Chavez and continued by current president Nicolas Maduro. Amid its worst economic crisis, the government claims that the new ID card will allow…

  • Beyond Imported Magic: Essays on Science, Technology, and Society in Latin America

    José Ragas•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2016

Conceived at a meeting held in Buenos Aires in 2011, Beyond Imported Magic condenses the major lines of research on science and technology in and about Latin America from the last decades. The title—“imported magic” was a common saying among Brazilian engineers in the 1970s, used to refer to computers—elegantly encapsulates the book's main goal: to demonstrate that the perception of Latin America as a site of passive reception of scientific knowl…
