  • Risk of Revocation Among Batterers: A Preliminary Analysis of Criminogenic, Intimate Partner Violence, and Mental Health Risks

    Open Access•Alisa R Garner, Jill Johansson-Love et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This study examined whether criminogenic risk, domestic violence risk, and mental health diagnoses would predict probation revocation among batterers in a felony domestic violence court (FDVC). Review of probation files included baseline assessments and probation disposition for FDVC probationers from January 2014 to March 2018 ( n = 64). Results of the binary logistic regression analysis showed that criminogenic risk was a significant predictor …

  • Examining the interpersonal theory of suicide in acutely suicidal psychiatric inpatients

    Phillip N Smith, Shane Kuhlman et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2020•References: 3

The current study examined hypotheses related to the development of suicidal ideation as directed by the interpersonal theory within a sample of acutely suicidal psychiatric inpatients. Consistent with ideation-to-action models, we distinguished suicidal desire from resolved plans and preparations. Although thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness were correlated with suicidal desire, only perceived burdensomeness was associated with s…

  • Depressive symptoms and age of alcohol use onset interact to predict suicidal ideation

    Caitlin Wolford-Clevenger, Caitlin Wolford‐Clevenger et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2019•References: 1

Distal risk factors of alcohol use may increase suicidal ideation in the presence of proximal risk factors, such as depressive symptoms. We tested whether depressive symptoms and age at onset of alcohol use interact to predict suicidal ideation in 500 individuals (67% men; 68% Black/African American) under criminal justice supervision. Regression analysis revealed that age of onset negatively associated with suicidal ideation only at average and …

  • Suicide ideation among Southern U.S. Sexual minority college students

    Caitlin Wolford-Clevenger, Caitlin Wolford‐Clevenger et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Sexual minority individuals are at higher risk for suicide ideation compared with heterosexual individuals. We tested whether the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide explains increased suicide ideation among sexual minority college students living in the southeastern region of the United States. The cross-sectional study assessed correlates of suicide ideation in a convenience sample ( n = 82) of sexual minority college students. Percei…

  • A Theory-Based Approach to Understanding Suicide Risk in Shelter-Seeking Women

    Open Access•Caitlin Wolford-Clevenger, Caitlin Wolford‐Clevenger et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2015

Women seeking shelter from intimate partner violence are at an increased risk for suicide ideation and attempts compared to women in the general population. Control-based violence, which is common among shelter-seeking women, may play a pivotal role in the development of suicide ideation and attempts. Current risk assessment and management practices for shelter-seeking women are limited by the lack of an empirically grounded understanding of incr…

  • An exploratory analysis of the relations between the rate of physiological habituation, the acquired capability for suicide, and acute risk factors for suicide

    Open Access•Phillip N Smith, Caitlin Wolford-Clevenger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aggression Conflict…•2015

Purpose – The interpersonal theory of suicide proposes that an individual must acquire the capability for suicide to carry out a near-lethal or lethal suicide attempt. This capability develops via habituation in response to painful and provocative life events. Some individuals might be more vulnerable to developing the capability for suicide because they habituate more quickly to stimuli. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relations betw…

  • The Relationship Between Family-of-Origin Violence, Hostility, and Intimate Partner Violence in Men Arrested for Domestic Violence: Testing a Mediational Model

    Open Access•JoAnna Elmquist, Ryan C Shorey et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Although research has shown links between family-of-origin violence (FOV), intimate partner violence (IPV), and hostility, research has not examined whether hostility mediates the relationship between FOV and IPV. The current study examined whether hostility mediates FOV and IPV perpetration in 302 men arrested for domestic violence. Results demonstrated that hostility fully mediated the relationship between father-to-participant FOV and physical…

  • Emotion Dysregulation, Gender, and Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration: An Exploratory Study in College Students

  • Interpersonal Violence, Alcohol Use, and Acquired Capability for Suicide

    Caitlin Wolford-Clevenger, Caitlin Wolford‐Clevenger et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Acquired capability for suicide (ACS), defined as pain tolerance and fearlessness about death, is theorized as necessary to enact suicide. This study examined the associations of interpersonal violence and alcohol use with ACS in 502 college students. General fearlessness/pain tolerance was positively associated with male gender and alcohol use. Fearlessness about death was positively associated with male gender and general physical violence perp…
