The 123s and affective, behavioral, and cognitives of unaccompanied Latinx Minors
Relevant clinical implications and policy recommendations for addressing the multifaceted needs of unaccompanied Latinx minors. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
Identifying Cigarette Smoking Trajectories from Homelessness to Housing
This study examines cigarette smoking trajectories from homelessness to housing and assesses demographic and clinical characteristics associated with multiple longitudinal smoking behavior patterns. Data were drawn from a longitudinal prospective cohort study of 421 adults experiencing homelessness who entered permanent supportive housing (PSH). Four quantitative surveys (baseline [while homeless], 3-, 6-, and 12 months post-housing) gathered par…
Antenatal depressive symptoms in Kenyan women living with HIV
Depression among pregnant women living with HIV (WLWH) in sub-Saharan Africa leads to poor pregnancy and HIV outcomes. This cross-sectional analysis utilized enrollment data from a randomized trial (Mobile WAChX, NCT02400671) in six Kenyan public maternal and child health clinics. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), stigma with the Stigma Scale for Chronic Illness, and intimate partner violence (IPV)…
Smoking-related psychosocial beliefs and justifications among smokers in India
These results suggest that smokers in India exhibit similar patterns of dissonance reduction as reported in studies from HICs: smokers who quit reduced their smoking justifications in the form of functional beliefs, not risk-minimizing beliefs. Smokers' beliefs change in concordance with their smoking behavior and functional beliefs tend to play a significant role as compared to risk-minimizing beliefs. Tobacco control messaging and interventions…
Longitudinal Predictors of Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration and Victimization in Latino Emerging Adults
Acculturative Stress and Bicultural Stress
This chapter discusses the concepts of acculturative and bicultural stress, the theory and method behind the measurement, and the implications of the US immigration policy context for stress. The central sources of acculturative and bicultural stress are reviewed, including intergroup discrimination, language stress, intragroup marginalization, and family cultural conflict. In particular, literature is reviewed that examines the association betwe…
Redefining the Contexts of Acculturation Related Stress Among Latino Adults
The scientific and clinical need to advance understanding of the processes related to Hispanic acculturation and its impacts is pressing. This chapter articulates how acculturation stress and related specific stressor events occur within distinct life domains or contexts. New research is juxtaposed to previous research that demonstrated how acculturation stressors cluster in unique, orthogonal, and independent life domains among both adult and ad…

Translating Health Behavior Interventions Across Nations
This article provides an overview of international translation of health behavior interventions. The ideas expressed in this article serve to provide direction when developing a health behavior program for a host country, utilizing previous programmatic knowledge from elsewhere. First, the authors discuss constituents of country-level variables about which international translation might focus. Next, they suggest two general sorts of adaptations …
Acculturation and Health
The purpose of this book is to bridge “basic” theory and research on acculturation—that is, what acculturation is, how it operates, and what are the appropriate methods to study it—with “applied” acculturation research—that is, how acculturation affects various health behaviors and outcomes among migrant populations. This introductory chapter reviews current theory and research on acculturation and health and points to future directions for the f…
The Oxford Handbook of Acculturation and Health
The Oxford Handbook of Acculturation and Health brings together three very different, but complementary, streams of work: theoretical and methodological “basic” work on acculturation, and applied work linking acculturation to various health outcomes among international migrants and their families, and interventions applying acculturation-related principles to prevent or treat health behaviors or problems. In this volume, the work of landmark accu…
Acculturation and Alcohol Use Among Hispanic and Asian American College Students
Many college students, are susceptible to alcohol use and related problems, including Hispanic and Asian Americans. A potential factor contributing to this risk is acculturation, which can be defined as the process of psychological, behavioral, social, and cultural change and adaptation that occurs when individuals or groups from different cultural backgrounds come in contact. This chapter provides a narrative review of the literature examining a…
Growing up in the U.S. Inner City
This chapter examines how adolescent development and acculturation impact suicidal behavior among Latinas living in the US inner city. After providing an overview of conceptual and empirical premises underlying immigrant youth development, acculturation, and suicidal behaviors, the article discusses cultural influences on Latina adolescents and their families. Drawing on data collected between 2005 and 2009, it then explores the various individua…
Acculturation Research Critiques and Alternative Research Designs
Dictionary definitions concur that “acculturation” means second-culture acquisition, but “acculturation” began as a Eurocentric concept that inferior peoples improve themselves by imitating superior peoples. Shadows of this persist despite the acceleration of acculturation research from nine studies per decade in the 1920s to the current rate of more than 6000 per decade. Reviews of this research have noted confused findings and lack of utility. …
Biculturalism
This chapter reviews the construct of biculturalism, focusing on individuals with multiple cultural backgrounds. The chapter focuses on biculturalism as a heterogeneous label, and it covers several variants of biculturalism that have been studied. A number of biculturalism-related constructs are discussed, including endorsement of two or more cultural streams, cultural frame switching, bicultural identity integration, globalization-based bicultur…
Remote Acculturation
Globalization has accelerated the exposure of nonmigrants to remote cultures in which they have never lived, producing remote acculturation (RA). The health implications of RA may reach further than those of immigrant acculturation because nonmigrants constitute the majority of the world’s population. This chapter describes the conceptualization of RA, reviews the body of empirical research on RA, discusses measurement of RA, and explores the hea…
Understanding Consistent Condom Use Among Homeless Men Who Have Sex with Women and Engage in Multiple Sexual Partnerships
The Relationship Between the Accumulated Number of Role Transitions and Hard Drug Use among Hispanic Emerging Adults
Emerging adults (ages 18 to 25) who experience multiple role transitions in a short period of time may engage in hard drug use as a maladaptive coping strategy to avoid negative emotions from stress. Given the collectivistic values Hispanics encounter growing up, they may experience additional role transitions due to their group-oriented cultural paradigm. This study examined whether those who experience many role transitions are at greater risk …
The Relevance of Cultural Activities in Ethnic Identity Among California Native American Youth
This study analyzed data from a large statewide sample of Native American adolescents throughout California to determine whether participation in cultural practices was associated with stronger ethnic identity. The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) scale was used to measure the ethnic identity of 945 Native American adolescents (416 male, 529 female) aged 13 - 19 across California. Respondents who participated in cultural activities inclu…
Stressful life events, smoking behavior, and intentions to smoke among a multiethnic sample of sixth graders
Results suggest that negative peer- and school-related events may lead to increased risk of smoking behavior and intentions to smoke among multicultural adolescents
Evaluating transdisciplinary science
The past two decades have seen a growing interest and investment in transdisciplinary research teams and centers. The Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Centers (TTURCs) exemplify large-scale scientific collaborations undertaken for the explicit purpose of promoting novel conceptual and methodological integrations bridging two or more fields. Until recently, few efforts have been made to evaluate the collaborative processes, and the scientifi…
Mood States Associated With Transitory Changes in Asthma Symptoms and Peak Expiratory Flow
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the within-person relations between transitory changes in mood, asthma symptoms, and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). METHODS: Thrice-daily for 21 consecutive days, 48 adults with moderate to severe asthma entered information in palm-top computers about their mood and asthma symptoms. A multidimensional model of mood, ie, the mood circumplex, informed the assessment of mood arousal and mood pleasantness. At each ob…
