Broken: Towards a vulnerability approach to SL research
On the skids: Mediating anguish, visibilising abusive places
As a way of identifying places which visibilise vulnerable groups, this paper analyses stories of people living on Los Angeles’ Skid Row from their visual portraits posted on photographer Mark Laita’s YouTube channel Soft White Underbelly . Recognising the important role of oral narratives in the production of semiotic landscapes, we are concerned with the ways people talk about space and (re)construct their vulnerabilities in relation to Skid Ro…
Sustainable, no matter what you buy: Profiling affordances of beefy landscapes
Inspired by a discourse-centred commodity chain analysis (Thurlow 2020), this study investigates beefy landscapes materialized in three organic grocery store chains in Germany. Organic food stores produce meat-intensive texts that may contradict their widely promoted and mediatized claims to sustainability, complicating the pleas for reducing meat consumption which is essential to limit global warming. Focusing on organic beef, with the largest c…
From winding tower to Eiffel Tower (of the ruhr area): The symbolic economy of industrial signs
In the last few decades, the Ruhr Area in Germany has undergone a structural transformation that changed the landscapes of its towns and cities. Nowadays, the remnants of heavy industry are integral parts of urban semiotics articulating the cities’ industrial “soul” and heritage. In this paper, we illustrate how an analysis of residual industrial structures opens up ways of thinking about reinvented spaces that anchor cultural memory, regional id…
Semiotic landscape in a green capital: The political economy of sustainability and environment
In the wake of the ‘climate apocalypse’ global discourse, the environmental agenda of the European Green Deal and the overarching objective for the European Union are to deliver a high level of protection and improvement of the quality of the environment. European cities are under pressure to reinvent urban environments and develop resilience to environmental risks. This paper looks at semiotic material appearing in Essen, a city in Germany award…
The Semiotics of Living Memorials
In this study, I analyse a commemorative gathering “The White Armbands Day” which works as the reperformance of dehumanizing practices dating back to the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia–Herzegovina. The commemoration specifically presents a request for the construction of a monument for the 102 killed children in Prijedor, the third largest municipality in the Serb Republic entity. The study is structured as a transdisciplinary reading (Halliday 2001. “N…
