  • Interactional Contingencies in Rehearsing a Theater Scene

    Open Access•Augustin Lefebvre, L Mondada•ARTICLE•Human Studies•2023•References: 18

Based on video-recordings of several weeks of rehearsals of a Japanese theater piece played by French actors, and adopting an ethnomethodological and conversation analytic perspective, this paper focuses on how the same few lines of a scene are subsequently enacted. In particular, it explores how the scene is played, not only in relation to the script but also to the situated moment-by-moment unfolding of embodied movements constituting the actio…

  • Leader and follower

    Open Access•Augustin Lefebvre•ARTICLE•Bandung•2022

This paper offers a critique of learning viewed solely through the categories of formal Vs. informal education as used by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development ( oecd ). This critique is based on the perspectives of ethnomethodology, conversation analysis and sociocultural theory. It considers that any learning consists of the construction of a common object between participants. I examine two possible organizations of intera…

  • The pacific philosophy of aikido

    Open Access•Augustin Lefebvre•ARTICLE•Martial Arts Studies•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 9

This paper engages with the question of the invention of martial arts by examining the case of the Japanese martial art aikido. Relying on existing schools of traditional martial arts, Morihei Ueshiba [1883-1969] created aikido with the goal of transforming techniques aiming at killing the opponent into techniques which could benefit both partners. Instead of becoming stronger than the opponent, the goal of aikido practice is to improve the indiv…

  • The coordination of moves in Aikido interaction

    Augustin Lefebvre•ARTICLE•Gesture•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 11

Relying on the analysis of naturally occurring interaction recordings, this article proposes the moment-by-moment description of a specific type of focused interaction, the interaction of the martial art Aikido. In Aikido encounters, participants exchange moves of attack, defense, avoidance also using a “weapon”. These “Aikido movements”, as I shall call them, are articulated by the whole body and serve as projectable interactional units. Aikido …
