"My Xene." Care, Affect, and Creative Non-Fiction Among Mothers and Daughters
I lost my mom in 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 outbreak. Ι began working on the first draft of this story several months before her death, at a particularly difficult stage of her illness during which our relationship was challenged. Care is a complex assemblage of economic and social practices, emotions and policies. In the micro-context of a mother-daughter relationship, I try to explore how care could be transformed into an emotional battl…
Female Genealogy and Cultural Memory in Georgia
Three generations of women creators of Georgian cinema belonging to the same family, the Gogoberidze family, will form the basis for this research, which aims to explore the notion of female genealogy through a multimodal ethnography. What type of memories does this female genealogy shape and how is it shaped by them? My research combines bibliographical research, interviews, and film analysis. By doing so, I examine how family memories as story-…
Women as cultural agents: Double coloniality, gender and diasporic memories of ethnic Greek Georgian women
In 2021, the world commemorated the 30th anniversary of the end of the Cold War, a half-century of ideological rivalry and divisions that left few societies untouched. ‘Cold War state of mind’, as the title of the book of Matthew Dune stated, with the primacy it gave to nation-states, overlooked issues of not belonging in dominant majorities and hegemonic cultures, for example, ethnic minorities and diasporas. In this framework, Greek-speaking co…
A Moderated Mediation Model of the Influence of Cynical Distrust, Medical Mistrust, and Anger on Vaccination Hesitancy in Nursing Staff
During the pandemic, nurses experienced anger that stemmed from a sense of threat, frustration, or even a sense of injustice. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between vaccination hesitancy, anger, cynicism, and medical mistrust among nurses, as there are no relevant studies in the literature. This study was conducted online by completing self-report questionnaires. The Dimensions of Anger Reactions-5, the 8-item “Cynical …
From Participant Observation to the Observation of Social Distancing: Teaching Ethnography, Blogging and University Education during the Pandemic
This article draws from a collaborative blog Our Quarantine Diaries created during the first COVID-19 confinement in Greece in 2020. In a context of sharing, participation, and solidarity, the blog aimed to facilitate an online/synchronous shared space between students and educators during this period of social distancing. The blog was a way to experiment and reflect through an ethnography of the ‘every day’ to capture aspects of our experiences …
City Museums and Local Integration Policies: The Case of the Volos City Museum
City museums tend to be identified with the gradual democratisation of memory against nationalist and essentialist discourses through the pluralisation of histories included in their collections. My paper examines the context in which the Volos City Museum was conceived, constructed and opened in 2015. The EU’s gradual decentralization and its connection to the diversification of European societies through migration, made necessary the integratio…
Imagination and Ethnography
In this paper, I will explore the use of fiction films as a teaching methods in classes of social anthropology with regional interest. I will compare the use of different films from the Black Sea region as way to 1. familiarise my students with the historical dis/continuities and presuppositions which contribute to the formation of the ‘region’, 2.bring them in contact with the methods of doing and writing ethnography. For this undertake, I am go…

Prisoner (once again) of the Caucasus: An ethnography of film
Eleni Sideri Punctum, 2(2): 106-123, 2016 DOI: 10.18680/hss.2016.0016 Abstract Much of the debate regarding the relation between film and semiotics, which marked the early years of film theory (see Metz 1974), limited itself to a textual analysis of films as closed symbolic systems. On the contrary, taking film as a living microcosm where various and even [...]
‘The Land of the Golden Fleece’: Conflict and Heritage in Abkhazia
Tourism was a big industry for imperial as well as Soviet Abkhazia. Famous writers like Chekhov and political figures like Stalin himself, spent the summer in the sub-tropical climate of Abkhazia taking advantage of its ‘pristine’ beauty. Could we find traces of this colonial tradition in the numbers of Russians who visit the place today? How are the notions of the ‘natural’ and the ‘unspoiled’ combined with the post-conflict Abkhazian landscape?…
Looking for the 'Language' of Recognition among Greek Communities of Georgia
The Caucasus was a zone of encounters for centuries, generating images of regional cosmopolitanism in the past. This vision creates expectations for the present, when it is included in the wider discussion about the meanings of cosmopolitanism today, its relation to modern geopolitics, and issues of social and political co-existence and recognition. This essay focuses on two different photographs that belong to different Greek families in Georgia…

The Diaspora of the Term Diaspora: A Working-Paper of a Definition
The quest for a definition of diaspora seems an impossible task because of the plurality of historical experiences, trajectories and agendas. One of the first approaches into this matter (Safran's typology 1991) tried to build a definition based on the idea of trauma, exile and nostalgia. However, it became evident that producing a definition based on the memories of one diasporic community (the Jewish experience) and thus, turning it into a para…
In quest of Eastern Europe: Troubling encounters in the post-Cold War field
This paper examines various transformations regarding the categories of 'us' and 'them' that occurred during my year of fieldwork in Georgia (2003-2004). My research questions concerning the formation of a 'Greek diaspora' in Georgia through family memories and historiographical accounts led me to 'paradoxical' encounters, which seemed to challenge my perceptions of selfhood as well as my ideas about the political, historical and geographical top…
