  • The foreign exchange market in Barcelona at the beginning of the fifteenth century

    Open Access•Angela Orlandi, Giacomo Toscano•ARTICLE•Financial History Review•2021

Based on the reconstruction of the monetary flows of a merchant-banking company operating in Barcelona at the beginning of the fifteenth century, this study aims to understand the reasons behind exchange-rate variations in the local currency with respect to the principal European markets, as well as the modalities and predictability of such oscillations. By using real rather than ‘hearsay’ rates, we present new assessments of the seasonal charact…

  • Playing with Luxury

Angela Orlandi•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Modern History•2018

Through the analysis of a doll made in Florence and destined for a family of Florentine merchants active in Seville, this paper outlines the patterns of consumption and the concept of luxury to be found amongst members of the Florentine economic elite of the sixteenth century. The doll is evidence for a lifestyle which was the culmination of a typically Renaissance intellectual sophistication and aesthetic sense, but also of the multiplicity of a…

  • Tuscan merchants in Andalusia

    Angela Orlandi•ARTICLE•European Review of History Revue…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This study intervenes in the debate concerning the crisis of the Mediterranean world and its merchant bankers following the European expansion, shedding new light on the presence and role of Tuscan merchants in Andalusia during the sixteenth century. Their business strategy was more successful than previously thought: this assumption comes from comparisons between quantitative data and the descriptions offered by Tuscan sources, as well as the wr…

    Angela Orlandi•ARTICLE•Entreprises et histoire•2012•Cited by: 2
