  • An Autoethnographic Reflection of Covid-19 and/as Biographical Disruption

Open Access•Anita Ghai, Suchaita Tenneti•ARTICLE•Indian Journal of Gender Studies•2024•References: 8

The COVID-19 pandemic and concomitant measures to mitigate it have exacerbated pre-existing social inequalities and have proven to be major disruptive phenomena at both individual and community levels. People with disabilities and chronic illnesses have been some of the most drastically impacted social groups during the pandemic whose isolation and vulnerabilities have often been compounded in the wake of the massive social upheaval. Through an a…

  • Notions of self

    Vanessa Singh, Anita Ghai•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2009•Cited by: 15•References: 3

To research children’s notions of self, semi‐structured interviews, drawings and focused group discussions were used with 14 children with mobility ‘impairments’ aged 11–16 years. The objective was to capture children’s ‘lived realities’. Findings illuminated immense variation and fluidity in children’s understanding of ‘disability’. Children desired to appear similar to ‘non‐disabled’ children. Most attributed ‘disability’ to existential causes.…

  • Prenatal Diagnosis

    Open Access•Anita Ghai, Rachana Johri•ARTICLE•Indian Journal of Gender Studies•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Feminists in India have been concerned about the declining sex ratio in the country. The Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act 1994 or PNDT Act, which outlaws sex-selective abortions, has been welcomed by feminists, even though they remain concerned with bottlenecks in its implementation. A relatively unnoticed but critical issue, however, is the possibly unwitting legitimisation of the abortion of potentially d…

  • Do You See What I See? The Impact of Age Differences in Time Perspective on Visual Attention

    R C Thomas, Robert Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2007•References: 1

In young adults, having a relatively long time perspective has been associated with a more abstract, holistic approach to cognitive tasks, as opposed to the more concrete, detailed approach associated with having a more limited or near-future focus ( Trope & Liberman, 2003). Here we studied the impact of age differences in temporal perspective on performance on a classic visual attention task ( Navon, 1977) that allowed for an orientation toward …

  • Education in a globalising era

    Open Access•Anita Ghai•ARTICLE•Social Change•2006•References: 10

Located in the larger context of globalisation and the changes effected by it in the Indian education sector, the paper looks at the issue of disability and education. The situation, it argues, is too complex and the problems for the disabled child are exacerbated by the caste, class and gender variables. The state while formulating its policies for the education of the disabled children hardly looks at the larger context in which the children ar…

  • Disabled Women

    Open Access•Anita Ghai•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2002

My purpose in this essay is to locate disabled women within the women's movement as well as the disability movement in India. While foregrounding the existential realities for disabled women in the Indian scene, I underscore the reasons for their absence from the agenda of Indian feminism. I conclude by reflecting on the possibilities of inclusion within Indian feminist thought.
