The role of rural circular migration in shaping weather risk management for smallholder farmers in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh
Insights for climate change adaptation from early sowing of wheat in the Northern Indo-Gangetic Basin
Climate adaptive rice planting strategies diverge across environmental gradients in the Indo-Gangetic Plains
The timing of rice planting has a profound influence on the productivity of the rice-wheat cropping pattern in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP), a system that provides the foundation for food security in South Asia. Nevertheless, strategies for adaptive rice planting in a rapidly changing climate are not well established. In this ex-ante analysis, regional gridded crop model simulations are deployed to investigate the impact of different rice plant…
Clinical and Genetic Correlates of Bipolar Disorder With Childhood-Onset Attention Deficit Disorder
BD+cADHD was associated with a greater number of comorbidities and reduced response to mood stabilizing treatments. The higher ADHD PRS for the BD+cADHD group may reflect a greater influence of genetic factors on early presentation of ADHD symptoms
The impact of groundwater depletion on agricultural production in India
India relies on groundwater irrigation to produce staple grain crops that provide over half of the calories consumed by its over 1.3 billion people. While groundwater has helped India achieve grain self-sufficiency, aquifers have been overexploited across much of the country and its implications for crop production are unclear. To understand how groundwater depletion affects staple grain (wheat, rice, maize, pearl millet, and sorghum) production …
The inverted curvilinear effects of business relationships on institutional success
Purpose Contrary to the widely held belief in the linear positive effects of business relationships (BRELs) on performance outcomes, the authors posit that the quality of a manager's BRELs with a foreign business partner has an inverted curvilinear effect on managing challenges arising out of institutional differences between two countries, which the authors define as institutional success. The authors further propose that managers' global role c…
Gender diversity in corporate boardrooms and risk disclosure
Purpose The study aims to pervade the gap in the domain of risk disclosure and gender diversity, which is comparatively uncharted. Gender diversity being a crucial element of corporate governance can deepen understanding on the issue in the backdrop of a developing country such as India, so this study aims to investigate the relationship between gender diversity on board and corporate risk disclosure. Design/methodology/approach Four measures of …
Factors Constraining Timely Sowing of Wheat as an Adaptation to Climate Change in Eastern India
Climate change is predicted to negatively impact wheat yields across northern India, primarily as a result of increased heat stress during grain filling at the end of the growing season. One way that farmers may adapt is by sowing their wheat earlier to avoid this terminal heat stress. However, many farmers in the eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) sow their wheat later than is optimal, likely leading to yield reductions. There is limited documen…

The impact of agricultural interventions can be doubled by using satellite data
Tradeoffs between groundwater conservation and air pollution from agricultural fires in northwest India
Using satellite data to identify the causes of and potential solutions for yield gaps in India’s Wheat Belt
Food security will be increasingly challenged by climate change, natural resource degradation, and population growth. Wheat yields, in particular, have already stagnated in many regions and will be further affected by warming temperatures. Despite these challenges, wheat yields can be increased by improving management practices in regions with existing yield gaps. To identify the magnitude and causes of current yield gaps in India, one of the lar…
Women directors and IPO underpricing
Purpose – This paper aims to fill the gap of the relatively under-researched impact of women directors on initial public offering (IPO) underpricing in developing countries. Gender diversity is an important emerging issue within the corporate governance literature. Recently, there has been a growing thrust on gender-diverse boards. However, their proportion on corporate boards is low worldwide. The paper examines the influence of women directors …
A multi-model assessment of regional climate disparities caused by solar geoengineering
Global-scale solar geoengineering is the deliberate modification of the climate system to offset some amount of anthropogenic climate change by reducing the amount of incident solar radiation at the surface. These changes to the planetary energy budget result in differential regional climate effects. For the first time, we quantitatively evaluate the potential for regional disparities in a multi-model context using results from a model experiment…
An analysis of Internet banking offerings and its determinants in India
Purpose This exploratory study is an attempt to present the present status of Internet banking in India and the extent of Internet banking services offered by Internet banks. In addition, it seeks to examine the factors affecting the extent of Internet banking services. Design/methodology/approach The data for this study are based on a survey of bank websites explored during July 2008. The sample consists of 82 banks operating in India at 31 Marc…
An Analysis of Socio-Cultural and Economic Changes in Migrant Agricultural Labourers in Punjab
This article examines the key issues relating to the socio-cultural and economic changes witnessed by the migrant agricultural labourers working in the farm sector of Punjab. A large number of labourers from the poor states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and neighbouring country of Nepal have been migrating to Punjab ever since the advent of the green revolution in the agricultural sector of Punjab. The empirical findings of the …
Determinants of Internet banking adoption by banks in India
Purpose – The current exploratory study is an attempt to discover the factors affecting a bank's decision to adopt Internet banking in India. Particularly, it seeks to examine the relationship between the bank's adoption decision and various bank and market characteristics. Design/methodology/approach – The data for this study consist of panel data of 88 banks in India covering the financial years 1997‐1998 to 2004‐2005. Logistic regression techn…
Investigation of trace metals by stripping voltammetry in the effluent of Bathinda thermal power station
An evaluation of differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was carried out of the effluent of the Bathinda thermal power station. Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu were characterized by their respective peak potential values. For this purpose pH and ionic strength were simulated. The trace concentration of the metals in the water sample is determined by the standard addition method. The concentrations of Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu were 461.8 ppb, 0.2 ppb, 2…
