Least-Cost Approaches towards Reconstructing Pre-Hispanic Trade Routes in the Eastern Andes of Ecuador
In the eastern Andes, archaeologists and ethnohistorians have found evidence of pre-Hispanic long-distance trade. This study attempts to reconstruct the corresponding trade routes of the Quijos people in Ecuador by using least-cost approaches. In the study region, a long continuity of the main routes is likely. Historical travel accounts, two old maps, archaeological data and four short old footpath sections provide insights into past mobility pa…
Issues in Replication and Stability of Least-cost Path Calculations
An important and frequently used tool in archaeological spatial analysis is least-cost path (LCP) analysis to compute routes connecting a set of targets. The outcome depends on the cost model chosen and the topographic data used. A slope-dependent cost model requires a digital elevation model (DEM) that should reflect the landscape in the past. It is often impossible to reconstruct the past terrain, and modern high-resolution elevation data resul…
Reconstructing Pre-Industrial Long Distance Roads in a Hilly Region in Germany, Based on Historical and Archaeological Data
The aim of this contribution is on the one hand to map pre-industrial long distance roads located in a hilly region east of Cologne, Germany, as exactly as possible and on the other hand to assess the accuracy of least-cost approaches that are increasingly applied by archaeologists for prehistoric road reconstruction. Probably the earliest map covering the study area east of Cologne dates back to 1575. The map is distorted so that rectification i…
Referee comment on Velocity-Based Terrain Coefficients for Time-Based Models of Human Movement
In many archaeological studies assessing the impact of topography on past human movement, only weak arguments without validation for the weights assigned to different terrain features are given. Therefore a study presenting terrain coefficients relying on sound tests is most welcome though the range of applications in archaeological modelling is limited. This article is a referee comment for de Gruchy, M., Caswell, E and Edwards, J. 2017 Velocity…
Least-cost Paths – Some Methodological Issues
This article deals with methodological issues connected with least-cost path (LCP) calculations in archaeology. The number of LCP studies in archaeology has increased rapidly during the last couple of years, but not all of the approaches applied are based on an appropriate model and implementation. Many archaeologists rely on standard GIS software with default settings for calculating LCPs and are not aware of possible alternatives and the pitfal…
Methodische Aspekte im Dialog
Der vorliegende Artikel diskutiert die Methoden und Datengrundlagen der Arbeit „Methodische Aspekte zur Rekonstruktion prähistorischer Besiedlungsmuster. Landschaftsgenese vom Ende des Neolithikums bis zur Eisenzeit im Gebiet des südlichen Oberrheins“ (Mischka, Freiburger Arch. Stud. 5, 2007). Ein Problem ist der Umgang mit ungenau datiertem Fundmaterial, hier zeigt die Arbeit neue und gleichzeitig einfach vermittelbare Wege auf
