  • Signs of a Ferruginous Environment in Ceramics

  • Limonite deposit at the Mikniškiai settlement site (South Lithuania)

Open Access•Andra Simniškytė, Aušra Selskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Archeologické rozhledy•2023

A cemented limonite deposit and sunken features recorded at the Mikniškiai settlement site (mid-1st century BC – early 3rd century AD) have been interpreted as potential signs of shallow opencast ore mining. Inhabitants of this area of Lithuania maintained close relations with the Bogaczewo culture, through which knowledge of iron metallurgy spread. However, the archaeometallurgical investigation revealed that the tested samples represent natural…

  • Prehistoric Iron Bloomery Debris on a Small Island in Lake Aisetas (Eastern Lithuania)

    Andra Simniškytė, Aušra Selskienė•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2023

The archaeological discoveries of metallurgical waste in Lithuania have established that metallurgical activities were commonly connected to settlements. However, recent investigations suggest that even in the case of small-scale production on a homestead industry level, small isolated smelting bloomeries could have existed outside settlements. The work presented in this article introduces the material acquired from the newly discovered prehistor…

  • Shallow and ploughed settlement sites in forested environment

    Open Access•Andra Simniškytė, Aušra Selskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2021•References: 21

This article presents the results of geochemical survey performed at one of the shallow and ploughed prehistoric settlement sites in eastern Lithuania. The goal of the survey was to delineate the territory of the prehistoric settlement based on a multilevel survey, and geochemical patterns were analysed relative to the stratigraphy of the site. This research explores how particular aspects of the built environment might be visible in layer‐specif…

  • Tracing Archaeology through Geochemistry

    Open Access•Andra Simniškytė, Aušra Selskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 15

The aim of the research summarized in this paper was to describe soil properties from different contexts at an excavated hilltop settlement (subsurface features with artefacts, subsurface features holding no artefacts, and several sets of samples from substratum), to determine possible anthropogenic indicators at this locality, and to assess what, if any, are the differences of soil properties taken from the features with artefacts and those hold…
