  • Capturing detailed human dependencies on the built environment for enriched natural-hazard risk assessments

Open Access•Chenbo Wang, Tom Logan et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2026

  • Dapp-Md

    Open Access•Patrick M Curran, David R Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2026

Climate adaptation planning increasingly requires decisions about interventions in systems where multiple hazards, uncertain drivers, and risk interactions occur simultaneously. Adaptive planning approaches such as Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways (DAPP) support decision-making under deep uncertainty by sequencing actions over time, but typically represent changing conditions along a single uncertainty axis. This simplification can obscure how in…

  • Evaluating deep uncertainty tools for complex decision problems

    Open Access•Patrick M Curran, Charlotte Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2025•References: 9

Decision-making methods have been developed to support planning under deep uncertainty, but their suitability for complex decision problems has not been systematically assessed. We define complex decision problems as those in which decision-makers must navigate multiple interacting uncertain conditions and evaluate how interventions perform across these conditions, including potential synergies, trade-offs, and unintended consequences. This paper…

  • Strategic retreat

    Open Access•S Archie, Kendrick Hardaway et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2024•References: 2

Many communities worldwide are retreating or preparing to retreat from hazardous areas due to climate change, but where they should relocate to needs careful consideration. The focus to date of “managed retreat,” has been on reducing detrimental and undesirable consequences. However, relocation also presents opportunities. Managing retreat should account not only for where people should be moved from but also where they could be moved to, in orde…

  • Integrating Equity Considerations into Agent-Based Modeling

    Open Access•Tim G Williams, David G Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2022

Advancing equity is a complex challenge for society, science, and policy. Agent-based models are \nincreasingly used as scientific tools to advance understanding of systems, inform decision-making, and share \nknowledge. Yet, equity has not received due attention within the agent-based modeling (ABM) literature. In this \npaper, we develop a conceptual framework and provide guidance for integrating equity considerations into ABM \nresearch and mo…

  • Evaluating urban accessibility

    Open Access•Tom Logan, Tim G Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2019

We revisit the standard methodology for evaluating proximity to urban services and recommend enhancements to address existing limitations. Existing approaches often simplify their measure of proximity by using large areal units and by imposing arbitrary distance thresholds. By doing so, these approaches risk overlooking vulnerable, access-poor populations – the very populations that such studies are often trying to identify. These limitations are…

  • Hard-adaptive measures can increase vulnerability to storm surge and tsunami hazards over time

  • The Jmyt-pr Document

Tom Logan•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Research…•2000

The study of in ancient Egypt is hampered by the lack of a digest of legal decisions1 comparable to the Code of Hammurabi (and similar codes, more properly collections of case law2) from Mesopotamia. The best we have is the Hermopolis or Demotic Code, or Legal Manual.3 It is a late compilation of the 3rd century (though some of it may go back to the 8th century B.C.).4 But we do know that Diodorus praised the completeness of Egyptian and that sev…
