Zu drei vermeintlichen ägyptischen Lehnwörtern in der Septuaginta
In her article "Egyptian Loan Words in Septuaginta and the Papyri," Sofia Torallas Tovar deals with Egyptian loanwords in the Septuagint, naming various domains from which the loanwords in question were taken. One of these domains deals with measures, where she refers to a total of six different borrowings from Egyptian, of which three, namely κόρος, γόμος and ἀρτάβη, have to be revised
אֶלְגָּבִישׁ
The article offers a discussion of a supposed new Egyptian loanword in the book of the prophet Ezekiel proposed by Jonathan Thambyrajah in 2021. The proposal that אֶלְגָּבִישׁ (Ez 13,11.13; 38,22) is a loanword from the Egyptian language can be firmly rejected due to many linguistic and cultural-historic problems
Ein neuer Textzeuge zu einem neunköpfigen Wesen (pBM EA 10669)
The present contribution is the editio princeps of pBM EA 10669, of which, despite its very interesting content, no notice has been taken thus far. The papyrus bears a text about a nine-headed figure with the main head in the form of a human being. Various passages inscribed on the papyrus can be paralleled directly with other texts from Egypt and thus offer an informative insight into the religious history of multi-headed beings, particularly du…
Eine einmal belegte Variante des Totenbuchspruchs 81
This article deals with the transformation spell Tb 81B, a variant of Tb 81 that is only attested once. It deals with the transformation of the deceased into a lotus flower. The spell has survived only on a single papyrus from Saqqara, which can be dated to the 20th dynasty. The spell, as well as the papyrus in general, has so far received little attention in research
Κάλαθος – doch kein ägyptisches Lehnwort
The present study deals with an alleged Egyptian loanword in ancient Greek. As Egyptian equivalent for Greek κάλαθος “basket” the Egyptian nouns qrh.t and krht were proposed, but for both suggestions there are some linguistic and semantic problems. Instead, the Greek noun is attested from the fifth century BC and is related to or derived from the Mycenaean ka-ra-to
Untersuchungen zu den Totenbuchsprüchen 33, 34 und 35
The essay examines the spells 33, 34 and 35 from the Book of the Dead. The topic of these texts is the protection from snakes, which is a well known theme of Ancient Egyptian literature, especially from texts concerning the afterlife. From the Pyramid Texts onwards, snakes are known from various genres as a dangerous threat for the dead and also the living. The paper includes a synopsis and a commentary on the three spells, and concludes with a c…
