  • The Mausoleum of Licinnia Flavilla and Flavianus Diogenes of Oinoanda

    Open Access•Alan Hall, A S Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Among the many tombs still to be seen in the necropolis surrounding the site of Oinoanda, in northern Lycia, the mausoleum built by Licinnia Flavilla for her parents and ancestors enjoys a special distinction, which it owes both to its size and to the vast genealogical inscription, comprising twelve generations of the ancestors and connexions of Licinnia Flavilla and her younger kinsman Flavianus Diogenes, which once covered its eastern façade. T…

  • Valerius Valentinianus, Praeses of Isauria

    Alan Hall, A S Hall•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1972•References: 1

Since it was my good fortune to begin working in Anatolia while Seton Lloyd was Director of the Ankara Institute, and to enjoy his friendly encouragement for several years, I am glad to have the opportunity of dedicating this article to him. In June, 1958, the following inscription was discovered by the writer in Yazdamıköy, one of a group of villages near the ancient site of Isaura (Zengibar Kalesi), which is situated on a mountain crest some 10…

  • The Gorgoromeis

    Open Access•A S Hall•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1971

An inscription giving the name of this otherwise unknown community was discovered by J. R. S. Sterrett in the West Taurus Lake District, during his 1885 Wolfe Expedition, in the large village of Ortakaraviran, which lies north-east of Suğla Gölü (the ancient Trogitis lacus), on low ground close to the Lake. The text of the inscription records that

  • Notes and Inscriptions from Eastern Pisidia

    Open Access•Alan Hall, A S Hall•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1968•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The region of Turkey whose Classical sites and monuments are discussed in this article lies wholly within the Western Taurus mountains, and consists of the eastern section of “the West Taurus Lake District”—as modern geographers now call it. The foothills of Taurus which extend around the south-western edge of the Konya Plain define both its northern and eastern limits; its western are established by the massive ranges which separate Lake Beyşehi…

  • The Site of Misthia

    Open Access•Alan Hall, A S Hall•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1959•References: 1

In May 1958, while looking for Classical remains in Eastern Pisidia, I copied the following honorific inscription in the town of Beyşehir, which lies at the south-east corner of the lake of the same name, anciently Karalitis. Its situation and surroundings are shown in Fig. 1. The text is carved on a rectangular slab of yellowish limestone, exposed to view by the removal of wall plaster. This is probably one face of the shaft of a statue-base, wh…
