Revealed Preference of the Federal Reserve
How close is observed Federal Reserve policy to policy that would be optimal in the control-theory sense? The question is addressed by using an inverse-control methodology. Federal Reserve policy is characterized by a feedback equation for either changes in the interest rate or money stock. Optimal policy is characterized by solution of the Ricatti equation. Parameters are estimated that characterize the relative importance to the Federal Reserve…
Intervention analysis
The preceding article by Hogan suggests both that our earlier (Rindfuss et al. 1978) did not contain any statistical data to support our assertions and that our conclusions were wrong. If Hogan wishes to deny that ours was a formal statistical analysis he is entitled to his definition but he certainly does not dispute two of our original observations each extremely unlikely under a hypothesis of chance variation only: (a) that birthrates declined…
Small Sample Properties of Three Tests for Granger-Causal Ordering in a Bivariate Stochastic System
T HE purpose of this paper is to study the small sample performance of tests for causal ordering of time series in the sense of Granger (1969). Versions of three tests are studied: that based directly on Granger's definition of causality and suggested by Sargent (1976); that suggested by Sims (1972); and the modification of Sims suggested by Geweke, Meese, and Dent (1982). Tests for causal orderings of time series have been applied often in recen…
