The externalities of immigration policies on migration flows
We analyze the externalities arising from a bilateral asylum policy—the list of safe origin countries—relying on a tractable model. Using self-collected monthly data, we estimate that including one origin country on the safe list of a given destination decreases asylum applications from that origin to that destination by 29 per cent. We use a counterfactual policy simulation to quantify the spillover effects occurring across origin and destinatio…
International trade, intellectual property rights and the (un)employment of migrants
We study the effect of trade liberalisation and intellectual property rights (IPR) protection on the unemployment rate of migrants relative to nonmigrants. We build a North–South trade and growth model with a positive steady state rate of migration. We find that bilateral trade liberalisation decreases the relative unemployment rate of migrants when migration is low and increases the relative unemployment rate when the migration rate is high. The…

Self-selection of Asylum Seekers
I examine the pattern of selection on education of asylum seekers recently arrived in Germany from five key source countries: Afghanistan, Albania, Iraq, Serbia, and Syria. The analysis relies on original individual-level data collected in Germany combined with surveys conducted at origin. The results reveal a positive pattern of selection on education for asylum seekers who were able to flee Iraq and Syria, and the selection is neutral for indiv…
