  • Is internal migration declining in Iceland? Intensities, geographical patterns and population composition 1986–2017

Open Access•Ólöf Garðarsdóttir, Thoroddur Bjarnason et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 10

The Nordic countries have higher rates of internal migration than most other Western societies and have not always shared in the declines noted in other countries. This paper examines migration in Iceland during the period 1986–2017 to add to the wider international literature on migration trends. Compared with its Nordic neighbours, Iceland has the highest rates of internal migration and currently also the greatest porosity in terms of internati…

  • Community social structure, social capital and adolescent smoking: A multi-level analysis

    Open Access•Þórólfur Þórlindsson, Thorolfur Thorlindsson et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 19

  • High youth access to movies that contain smoking in Europe compared with the USA

Reiner Hanewinkel, James D Sargent et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2011

Tobacco imagery is still common in popular films shown in European countries and the USA. None of the seven countries examined followed the WHO recommendations on restricting youth access to movies that portray smoking. Compared to the USA, European youths have access to substantially more movies in general, and this gives them access to more movies that portray smoking in particular

  • Bayesian estimation of hispanic fertility hazards from survey and population data

    Open Access•M S Rendall, Mark S Handcock et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 15

Previous studies have demonstrated both large gains in efficiency and reductions in bias by incorporating population information in regression estimation with sample survey data. These studies, however, assumed that the population values are exact. This assumption is relaxed here through a Bayesian extension of constrained maximum likelihood estimation applied to U.S. Hispanic fertility. The Bayesian approach allows for the use of both auxiliary …

  • The fertility contribution of Mexican immigration to the United States

    Open Access•Stefan Hrafn Jonsson, M S Rendall•ARTICLE•Demography•2004•Cited by: 20•References: 11

Crucial to the long-term contribution of immigration to a receiving country’s population is the extent to which the immigrants reproduce themselves in subsequent, native-born generations. Using conventional projection methodologies, this fertility contribution may be poorly estimated primarily because of problems in projecting the number of immigrants who are at risk of childbearing. We propose an alternative method that obviates the need to proj…

  • Modeling Momentum in Gradual Demographic Transitions

Open Access•Robert Schoen, Robert E Schoen et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2003

The analysis of population momentum following a gradual decline in fertility to replacement level provides valuable insights into prospects for future population growth. Here, we extend recent work in the area by applying a new form of the quadratic hyperstable (QH) model, which relates exponentially changing fertility to the resultant exponentiated quadratic birth sequence. Modeling gradual transitions from an initial stable population to an ult…

  • A diminishing population whose every cohort more than replaces itself

    Open Access•Robert Schoen, Stefan Hrafn Jonsson•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2003•Cited by: 2

We observe that a dynamic population model can have period fertility that is always below replacement and cohort fertility that is always above replacement. We ask whether such a paradoxical population will get larger or smaller, and show that it must

  • Estimating multistate transition rates from population distributions

    Open Access•Robert Schoen, Stefan Hrafn Jonsson•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2003•Cited by: 2

The ability to estimate transition rates (or probabilities) from population distributions has many potential applications in demography. Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF) has been used for such estimation, but lacks a meaningful behavioral, or demo
