  • Persistent postpartum depressive symptoms and developmental impairment in Bangladeshi children

Open Access•Rasheda Khanam, Khanam Ra et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: Optimal child development across cognitive, language, and motor domains is essential for long-term health and well-being. Postpartum depression has been linked to adverse child developmental outcomes, but evidence on the impact of persistent postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS) across these domains and over time remains limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Methods: We retrieved data from the Alliance for Materna…

  • Determinants of human milk lactoferrin concentrations in rural Bangladesh

Open Access•Chloe Andrews, Ingrid Olson et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein in human milk (HM) that reduces the risk of neonatal sepsis. Data from low- and middle-income countries regarding the determinants of HM lactoferrin concentration is limited. Our objectives were to assess how HM lactoferrin concentrations change over time and identify factors associated with lactoferrin concentration. From a pregnancy cohort in Sylhet, Bangladesh, we enrolled 99 women to join the lactat…

  • Multi-Omics for Mothers and Infants (Momi) Consortium

Open Access•Xin Tang, Salahuddin Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: The Multi-Omics for Mothers and Infants (MOMI) Consortium aims to define biological mechanisms associated with preterm birth, small for gestational age, preeclampsia, and stillbirth. Globally, the burden of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) is highest in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The MOMI Consortium consists of six different LMIC sites established by The Alliance for Maternal and Newborn Health Improvement in Banglades…

Open Access•Tarik Hasan, Rasheda Khanam et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: Anaemia during pregnancy poses a major public health problem globally, with reported prevalences ranging from approximately 5.2% to 65.7%. A significant portion of this burden is borne by low- and middle-income countries. We aimed to determine the prevalence of anaemia during pregnancy and identify the factors associated with anaemia in the third trimester of pregnancy in a cohort of women in the rural Sylhet district, Bangladesh. Met…

  • The relation between social media use and novel psychoactive substance use among adolescents – the mediating role of internalizing and externalizing behaviors

Open Access•Getachew Asmare Adella, Dereje G Gete et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2026

This study explores whether internalizing and externalizing behaviors mediate the association between adolescent social media use and novel psychoactive substance (NPS) use in Australia, addressing a gap where counterfactual mediation methods and NPS use have been rarely applied. The study sample included 1605 adolescents from the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Children. We assessed adolescents’ internalizing and externalizing problems using t…

  • Childhood IQ and adolescent health behavior

    Open Access•Hendrik Jürges, Rasheda Khanam•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2025

This study investigates whether cognitive ability in early childhood predicts adolescent health-related and risky behaviors, independent of schooling and socioeconomic background. Using longitudinal data from the Kindergarten cohort of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC), we link matrix reasoning scores from ages 6 to 10 to health behaviors at age 16/17. Behaviors include substance use, unsafe driving, nutrition, dental hygiene, …

Open Access•Nirmal Gautam, Mohammad Mafizur Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

This study provides useful insight into socioeconomic inequalities and health behavior outcomes in children and adolescents. These findings stress the need for tailored interventions designed to improve the health behaviors of families from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Additionally, addressing unhealthy dietary behaviors, such as the higher consumption of sweet and savory foods among children from higher SES backgrounds, is equally critical. …

  • Asymmetric effects of long-term war on human resource development in Af…ghanistan

Open Access•Mohammad Ajmal Hameed, Mohammad Mafizur Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•Quality & Quantity•2024

This study explores the effects of war on human resource development in Afghanistan using non-linear autoregressive distributed lags (NARDL) and asymmetric causality analysis. The results of the NARDL bound test support an asymmetric long-run relationship between predictors. It reveals that positive and negative shocks from the per capita cost of war, child mortality rate, and population growth rate asymmetrically affect the school enrollment rat…

  • Folate deficiency in pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth

Open Access•Verna Mauren Amy Lazar, Sayedur Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

Background: Preterm birth (PTB) and its complications are important public health problems. Its aetiology is multifactorial and involves both modifiable and non-modifiable factors. Among the modifiable risk factors, micronutrient deficiencies, including maternal folate deficiency, are increasingly being studied in PTB. In this study, we estimated the prevalence of folate deficiency during pregnancy and examined its association with PTB among rura…

  • Child Work and Schooling in Bangladesh

Open Access•Rasheda Khanam, Mohammad Mafizur Rahman•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2007

Using data from Bangladesh, this paper examines how the birth order of a child influences parental decisions to place children in one of four activities: ‘study only’, ‘study and work’, ‘neither work nor study’ and ‘work only’. The results of the multinomial logit model show that being a first-born child increases the probability of work as the prime activity, or at least a combination of school and work, rather than schooling only. The results c…
